The English Seminar in the Faculty of Philology FB09, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster, invites applications for a

Full Professor of American Studies
(salary level W3)

starting on 01 October 2019.

In their research and teaching, the successful candidate should cover the entire breadth of American Studies. The Chair’s thematic focus is on US American literatures and cultures, especially in the contexts of the transnational dynamics of colonialism, slavery, migration, and cultural exchange; it also includes a perspective on the Caribbean and/or Canada. In addition, one of the following research and teaching areas would be desirable: diaspora studies, race and ethnicity, gender studies, law and literature, or cultural theory.

We are seeking a creative and dynamic scholar who is able to use their international reputation for the benefit of the English Seminar. We require an ambitious teaching portfolio for the School of Philology’s Bachelor, Master, and PhD programmes and expect participation in academic examinations and university administration. The readiness to attract third-party funding is expected, therefore prior experience in this area is an advantage.

Application requirements for the professorship include a PhD and additional academic achievements – as Juniorprofessor (assistant professor), in a Habilitation, as academic staff member of a university or other research institution, or as a researcher in business, industry, administration, or another area, either in Germany or abroad. If applicable, the successful candidate will be prepared to acquire good German language skills within the first two years of their appointment.

The University of Münster is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the proportion of senior women academics. Consequently, we actively encourage applications by women. Female candidates with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered within the framework of the legal possibilities. We also welcome applications from candidates with severe disabilities. Disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications will be preferentially considered.

Applicants are requested to submit their application (cover letter, CV, degree certificates, publication list, record of teaching experience) via email within a single PDF document no later than 20 December 2018 to the following address:
