The Faculty of Arts (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-arts) of the University of Helsinki is Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities and the largest in terms of the structure and range of disciplines. It is also a significant international community fostering research, education and cultural interaction. The Faculty of Arts carries out research and teaching in the languages and literatures of Europe and other parts of the world, totalling close to 40 languages. In addition, a general theory of linguistics, translation studies and comparative literature is being developed.

TENURE TRACK OR FULL PROFESSOR IN INTERACTIONAL LINGUISTICS

 

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his/her qualifications and career stage. Interactional linguistics focuses on linguistic structures and interactional practices in everyday interaction. Interactional linguistics builds in particular on conversation analysis, as well as functional linguistics and linguistic anthropology. The successful applicant is a distinguished scholar of a Finno-Ugric or Scandinavian language with profound expertise in the study of spoken language and interaction, and familiarity with the research tradition of interactional linguistics. Furthermore, the successful applicant has experience in international research collaboration and methodological competence that can also benefit linguistic education and research more broadly.

 

The professor/associate professor/assistant professor in interactional linguistics will provide teaching in the Language, Multimodality and Interaction study module, based on collaboration between five disciplines (Finnish language, Scandinavian languages, sociology, education and logopedics), as well as in the master’s programmes of the Faculty of Arts and the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies.

 

The research focus areas of the Faculty of Arts include the study of cultural and linguistic diversity and interaction.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.

 

An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary to serve as academic leaders.


Holders of teaching and research positions at Finnish universities must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction. The language of instruction in this position is Finnish. Instruction can also be given in Swedish. The appointee must have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Finnish and in Swedish. To successfully carry out to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.

•teaching experience, supervision of theses and dissertations and other pedagogical merits

•vision of how the applicant intends to focus his or her research and develop the field

•interview.

 

SALARY

Annual gross salary for a full professor varies between 64,000 and 91,000 euros, and for an assistant/associate professor between 53,000 and 72,000 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.

 

Health care services and standard Finnish pension benefits are provided for the University employees.
