Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Indigenous History of North America

The Department of History, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University invites applications from outstanding scholars who specialize in the Indigenous History of North America for appointment as full professor or as associate professor with the qualifications to be promoted to the full professor level within one or two years of his/her appointment. Note that this appointment is contingent upon a successful nomination to the Canada Research Chairs program ( at the Tier 1 level. The start date for this position is July 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.


The ideal candidate will be a world-class researcher with demonstrated international recognition in the field of Indigenous History. The successful candidate will have a PhD in History or related field as well as demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarly research. Preference will be given to those who have obtained peer-reviewed external research funding, supervised graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, participated actively in the graduate program, and contributed to curricular development at all academic levels. The successful applicant shall be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.


The successful candidate will join the growing number of scholars within the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies who possess research and teaching expertise in Indigenous issues. York University is located on the traditional territory of many Indigenous Nations and the area has been care-taken by the Anishinabek Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, the Huron-Wendat, and the Métis. The territory is now home to many Indigenous Peoples. York University is committed to working directly with Indigenous communities to help them use historical understandings to heal from colonial wounds and move forward in health, sovereignty, justice, and equity.


The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program seeks to attract outstanding researchers for careers at Canadian universities. Tier 1 Chairs are intended for outstanding researchers acknowledged by their peers as world leaders in their fields. Appointment to a Tier 1 Chair is for seven years, is renewable once, and comes with enhanced research support from the program. Please see the CRC website ( for further eligibility details.
