The Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for an associate or full professor in documentary film. The successful candidate would also direct the School’s documentary program.

 

Significant professional achievement in the field of documentary is required. The successful candidate will have an outstanding reputation in one or more of the following areas: directing, producing, shooting, reporting, writing, editing, or other components of nonfiction production. The preferred candidate will bring to the job a strong vision for leading one of the country’s finest documentary programs into the future. He or she will be a journalist first, being versed in the skills, principles, and ethics underpinning the profession, as well as in the history and evolution of documentary film, and be familiar with cutting-edge technologies shaping the field. The successful candidate will teach at the master’s level in the Graduate School of Journalism, working with students who produce their own documentaries to fulfill their Master of Journalism project requirements and who upon graduation seek careers in the field.

 

The selected candidate will oversee and teach within a documentary curriculum in which the craft of reporting, writing, and narrative storytelling remains central. The School expects the candidate selected to remain engaged with the field, continuing to produce documentaries and participating in critical discourse surrounding it. As a member of the faculty of the Graduate School of Journalism, the candidate will be expected to work with other faculty members in positioning the school to embrace the opportunities presented by the digital revolution. The successful candidate would be expected to participate actively in student advising and take part in faculty governance activities, including service on Journalism School committees. A firm commitment to the classroom and the program is expected.

 

The selected candidate will have program funds available, but additional money will be required for project and curricular needs, so skill in fundraising would be an advantage.

 

The Graduate School of Journalism is a two-year Master of Journalism program enrolling a total of 120 students who specialize in news and long-form writing, visual journalism, multimedia, audio journalism, photography, and documentary.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent international degree, or 10 years minimum professional experience at time of application.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience mentoring or teaching at the professional level.
  • A record of accomplishment in producing award-winning journalism.
  • Record of successful fundraising.
  • Managerial experience.
