Annual Adjunct Instructor in Foundational Literacy

Annual Adjunct faculty members are professionals with the responsibility of providing a quality learning experience for University of Cincinnati students on yearly basis. Annual Adjunct faculty report to a Program Coordinator or Associate School Director, and perform instruction-related duties and responsibilities in accordance with the mission, policies and procedures of a particular program and the School of Education.

Duties for this position include teaching foundational Literacy courses for the Middle Childhood and Early Childhood Education programs. Particular coursework will be negotiated with the Literacy and Second Language Program Coordinator to include such courses as phonics, literacy foundations, and disciplinary literacy, as well as supervising teacher candidates in the field. Duties include, but are not restricted to:


  • Distribute and review the course syllabus during the first class meeting.
  • Utilize active learning methods and use a variety of instructional strategies designed to assist the learner in meeting the objectives of the course.  These activities can include, but are not limited to cooperative learning, experiential learning, and writing to learn.
  • Provide student feedback in a timely manner and in a manner that supports growth.
  • Utilize procedures for inviting guest speakers to class and/or arranging for field trips when appropriate.
  • Remain abreast of ongoing developments and practices in professional content area(s).
  • Follow the course or program standard design where such a design is prescribed.  In situations where there is not a standard departmental syllabus, prepare one that follows the prescribed institutional format.
  • Arrange for the acquisition and preparation of appropriate materials and equipment in a timely manner necessary to meet course objectives in collaboration with the area faculty supervisor or Literacy and Second Language Studies program coordinator.
  • Be prompt and accurate in the recording and reporting of student data.


  • Become familiar with academic and social support, making reasonable provisions to accommodate individual differences, maintaining the academic integrity of the college, and being available to assist students in achieving their learning goals.  This would include recommending campus services to students as needed.
  • Meet with program faculty at monthly meetings, and render service to the program when appropriate. 
  • Consistently demonstrate motivation and productive and collegial work habits; commitment to excellence as expressed in the School mission, vision and values; positive, cooperative and supportive attitude toward others; situationally appropriate professional attire.


Minimum Qualifications: An earned Master’s Degree in Literacy or related field. K-12 teaching and/or leadership experience in literacy.


Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching literacy-related courses in higher education; Experience using a learning management system (e.g., Blackboard or Canvas); Earned doctoral degree.
