DUTIES

This is a six-month, limited-term opportunity.

The Assistant Dean of Students provides leadership and ensures optimal administrative operations for student services, promoting the support and development of the diverse student population at Thompson Rivers University. The Assistant Dean provides administrative oversight of non-faculty units as directed by the Dean of Students. The Assistant Dean is responsible for increasing the visibility and support of the departments’ services, collaborating with other academic units and divisions, enhancing existing services, and monitoring or benchmarking other institutions to identify best practices.

Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Assistant Dean of Students provides vision and strategic direction to the university’s academic support services within the Faculty of Student Development. He/she is responsible for ensuring that these services are consistent with research and best practices in student services, that they are supported and understood within the university community, and that they are meeting departmental and university objectives. 

The Assistant Dean will be central in supporting the University’s priority to Increase Student Success through pan-campus projects and by implementing a comprehensive student communication plan. This work may include business process reviews, collaborative projects with other campus units, community outreach, and leading task forces.

Specifically, the Assistant Dean:

  1. Oversees the administrative (non-faculty) functions of units within the Dean of Students portfolio. 
  2. In collaboration with relevant faculty chairs, ensures that high quality support for TRU students’ learning, success and engagement is maintained in all units and programs within his/her portfolio. 
  3. Reviews and implements software options related to student services. 
  4. Supports regular assessment activities and reporting on academic support services, including usage, satisfaction and impact. 
  5. Oversees the marketing of support programs and services through events and social media as appropriate. 
  6. Develops and maintains guidelines for non-faculty staff, based on institutional policies and priorities. 
  7. Collaborates with other student-support areas across the university. 
  8. Supervises and manages direct reports, as well as auxiliary employees, including hiring, providing direction, training, probationary reviews, performance reviews, and disciplinary action.
  9. Identifies additional staffing needs to meet peak demands.
  10. Determines professional development needs for staff and supports the implementation a professional development plan.
  11. Oversees and coordinates team building and learning opportunities for the division.
  12. Works with the faculty coordinators to plan budget submissions and to steward financial resources to meet objectives within the Dean of Student’s portfolio. 
  13. In consultation with the Dean of Students, establishes long- and short-term initiatives that are consistent with the strategic priorities of the division and University.

QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • Master’s Degree in a related field—teaching and learning, learning theory, curriculum, educational psychology etc.
  • Five or more years of experience in post-secondary education, two of which were in instruction, tutoring, counselling or academic support roles 
  • A strong understanding of current issues and best practices affecting student success, particularly in the first-year 
  • Experience in conceptualizing and implementing student success programs 
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, and administrative skills enabling effective and collaborative working relationships within Student Development and across Faculties and Schools 
  • Demonstrated skills in project management, organizing and problem solving 
  • Demonstrated currency with educational technology and student information systems 
  • Strong service orientation 
  • Demonstrated ability to apply creative approaches to program creation and program renewal 
  • Ability to apply current knowledge of the developmental, learning and transition needs of undergraduate students 
  • Demonstrated project management, including the ability to negotiate and influence decision makers 
  • Ability to integrate university policies and regulations related to academic advising, enrolment management and student services 
  • Ability to analyze and prepare budgets and report on financial activity 
  • Proven advanced computer literacy including word processing, spreadsheets, database, power point presentation and data analysis software  
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and coordinate the work of others 
  • An ability to work evenings and weekends  
  • Those applicants with an understanding of diversity and issues affecting under-served and under-represented student populations are of particular interest
