Job description

The Department of Philosophy (capacity group Critical Cultural Theory) of the Faculty of Humanities is looking for an Assistant professor in Continental Philosophy. The ideal candidate for this position will have a strong record of publications in prestigious international journals, experience with acquiring third party funding, a broad philosophical background, outlook and interests, and solid experience with teaching at both BA and MA level, including academic skills. We welcome applications from candidates with research expertise in, and a broad command of, 19th-20th century continental philosophy. We also require a systematic specialization, in aesthetics and/or philosophy of culture.

We welcome specifically applications from candidates with research expertise in philosophy of culture and philosophy of art since German idealism. ‘Culture’ has a broad meaning and includes popular culture and the subject of live forms. You are working with modern and critical approaches of aesthetic and cultural problems but you are interested in historical, social and political dimensions as well. For example, you are working on questions about aesthetics and ethics or politics, theories of modernity, or theories of the humanities.

Area of competence: continental philosophy.

Areas of specialization: philosophy of culture and/or aesthetics.

The candidate is expected to take an active role in departmental activities, ranging from research seminars to board memberships and grant applications. Good social skills, a deeply collegial attitude, and ability and willingness to take up substantial administrative tasks are particularly welcome.

The candidate will be part of the group Critical Cultural Theory (CCT) and do research within the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA).

There is a continuous big interest of students in aesthetics, philosophy of art, theories of culture and Critical Theory. Our teaching needs, thus, are focused on, but not limited to, introductory and advanced courses in these special areas at BA- and MA-level, BA and MA theses supervision, as well as text-based courses with intensive training of academic skills such as careful and precise close reading, presentation techniques and academic philosophy writing. The candidate will thus have demonstrable experience with the type of teaching just indicated.

  • PhD in Philosophy already defended at the time of application;
  • research publications in prestigious international journals;
  • area of competence: continental philosophy;
  • areas of specialization: philosophy of culture and/or aesthetics;
  • broad teaching experience at BA and MA level;
  • expected to teach BA and MA courses in Philosophy of Culture and Aesthetics as well as text-based training of academic skills;
  • verifiably broadly deployable and prepared to be deployed in several teaching programmes;
  • verifiably focused on collaboration with other disciplines;
  • amenable to personal and professional development that focuses on broad deployability;
  • a thorough command of Dutch and English. If the candidate's native language is not Dutch, they are expected to be able to teach in Dutch within two years but preferably sooner.

Passing the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), programme II, is a prerequisite for a permanent employment contract.
