Position description

UCLA Department of Theater - Assistant Professor in Directing

The UCLA Department of Theater invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Directing effective July 1, 2023. We seek candidates with the potential for exceptional research/creative activity and excellence in teaching, who will actively contribute to the diversity of viewpoints, cultural backgrounds, experiences and practices in the Department of Theater.

Candidates should have expertise in directing contemporary performance which may include but is not limited to the following areas: new play development, digital/multimedia theater, social practice, devised theater, musical theater, collaborative creation, Indigenous Performance, Latinx performance, Asian-American performance, African-American performance and/or intercultural performance.

Candidates must demonstrate a continuing artistic practice, a commitment to higher education and the ability to teach graduate and undergraduate courses. We actively seek candidates who will complement and diversify the Theater Department’s cultural, pedagogical and artistic strength and encourage applications from individuals who identify as members of communities under-represented in the field of theater.

The successful candidate will teach an array of courses as applicable to their expertise in the BA and MFA programs, and contribute to the advancement and growth of the directing area and Theater Department. Proficiency in the principles of directing, script analysis, staging techniques, collaborative creation, new play development, and contemporary theater-making is preferred. The position will also require advising students in production, assisting in recruitment for the BA and MFA programs, and contributing to curricular development.

The position will also require committee responsibilities on a departmental and university level, such as curricular development, participating in recruitment, and contributing to the season selection.

The candidate will be expected to maintain and grow a robust professional career in addition to their teaching and academic service load.

Applicants should have a completed terminal degree or a minimum of 4 years professional experience.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

  • Excellence or the promise for excellence in creative research.
  • Ability to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • A collaborative approach to theater education and ongoing relationships in the field.
  • A welcoming approach to students with a broad range of knowledge and skills in theater performance, production, and scholarship.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of culturally diverse students.

Prior activities demonstrating leadership, service, and commitment to diversity are strongly sought after.

A cover letter, CV/resume, digital portfolio, contact information of three references, a statement of teaching and a statement of contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion are required.

Please address your materials to the Chair of the Faculty Search Committee, Professor Marike Splint.

Position will remain open until filled. For full consideration materials must be received by October 15, 2022.

The University of California, Los Angeles, and the Department of Theater are interested in candidates who are committed to the highest standards of professional activities and to the development of a campus climate that supports equality and diversity. Women and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists’ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
