We are looking for


As Assistant Professor of Diversity in Language & Communication you will be a staff member of the Department of Language & Communication, serving its programmes of Communication & Information Studies, International Business Communication, and Linguistics, while also serving the language and culture programmes of the Department of Modern Languages & Culture.

You will participate in teaching and designing these programmes in the area of diversity in language, gender and culture, and its consequences for communication in organisations and in society. You will teach on topics such as the consequences of the situation in which non-natives engage with natives or other non-natives in organisational and societal communication, and the effects of language choice (including lingua franca), argument and style choices, and other pragmatic aspects of verbal and non-verbal communication in multicultural contexts. As such, your teaching will specifically contribute to the interdisciplinary minors that will start in September 2020. Your research will be located in the Radboud University Centre of Language Studies, one of the world's leading language and communication research institutes. You will contribute to empirical research towards CLS's focus areas, particularly in Language Systems & Language Variation, First & Second Language Acquisition, and/or Discourse & Communication. You will pursue grant application opportunities. In addition, you will participate in the department's administrative tasks.

We ask


  • An MA degree in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Business Communication, or a related discipline.
  • A PhD degree in Non-native Communication, or Intercultural Communication, or in a related field.
  • High proficiency in the English language (C2-CEFR).
  • Proficiency in Dutch at the C1 level at the moment of appointment.
  • Demonstrable experience in academic teaching at BA and MA levels and with course development.
  • A good publication track record within the domain of diversity in language and communication or other relevant areas in international refereed journals of high quality.
  • Familiarity with the Dutch academic context.

Research is embedded in two faculty research institutes: the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) and the Radboud Institute for Culture & History (RICH). The faculty currently enrols some 2,400 students in three departments: the department of History, Art History and Classics, the department of Modern Languages and Cultures, and the department of Language and Communication. We offer

  • Employment: 28 hours per week.
  • A maximum gross monthly salary of € 5.656 based on a 38-hour working week (salary scale 12).
  • The exact salary depends on the candidate's qualifications and amount of relevant professional experience.
  • In addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
  • Duration of the contract: 2 years.
  • The intended start date is 1 September 2020.
