Position Summary:
Position: Assistant Professor of Practice in Music Education on the Blacksburg campus. The position is a non-tenure-track, academic year appointment with possible opportunities for summer session employment. The start date is August 10, 2019.

 

Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the position require the assistant professor of practice to offer courses in Music Education or areas of program need. The standard teaching load is three courses per semester, which includes instruction, supervision, and advising of undergraduate and master’s students preparing for Virginia licensure in PK-12 Music Education, including both vocal, instrumental, and general music. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: serving as the Music Education coordinator, supervisor and evaluator of student interns and student teachers; developing and maintaining relationships between cooperating teachers in regional school divisions; teaching graduate secondary advanced methods courses; maintaining relationships with the Department of Music, music education faculty and students; managing the admissions process; advising and supervising the e-portfolio process; preparing accreditation and assessment reports; and managing other program responsibilities. Service to the School of Education and college is also expected. Although professor of practice faculty members may conduct research, there are no expectations for an extensive research program as is typical of tenure-track faculty appointments. May have occasional travel to attend professional conferences. A criminal background check is required of all candidates recommended for employment.

 

Required Qualifications:
Successful candidates must have:
1. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, Education, or a related field, or an MFA Degree. (Completion of the terminal degree is required by the time of appointment – August 10, 2019).
2. Significant successful classroom teaching experience at the K-12 level.
3. Evidence of sustained engagement in education and performance in music.

 

Preferred Qualifications:
Successful candidates may have:
1. Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working with diverse populations.
2. A K-12 teaching license in one of the 50 states.
3. Significant secondary school experience (high school preferred)
4. Experience in supervising music candidates in field experiences and/or student teaching.
5. Experience teaching music education courses (instrumental, choral, and general music pedagogy) in an accredited licensure program (Instrumental preferred).
6. Knowledge and experience in: philosophy and rationale of music education, evaluation of instruction, conducting, standards-based assessment, researched based best practices in instrumental, choral and general music pedagogy, budget preparation and procurement procedures, and fiscal procedures of public schools.
7. Experience conducting professional development for teachers (e.g., school-based, conferences, workshops).
8. Experience with national and/or state accreditation of a music education licensure program.
