Assistant Professor: ‘Philosophy of Islam and Society in the Arab World’ Radboud University Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Netherlands

Assistant Professor: ‘Philosophy of Islam and Society in the Arab World’ (0.6 FTE)

Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies
Vacancy number: 21.04.19
Application deadline: 22 April 2019

The Department of Islam Studies is looking for a new assistant professor to strengthen the Department's research and teaching in the field of intercultural political philosophy. We are specifically interested in an expert on the relationship between Islam, philosophy, culture and (identity) politics.
In its teaching and research efforts, the Department of Islam Studies focuses ever more strongly on the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). In response to the current major transformations in the religious, political and intellectual spheres in that geographical area, we wish to increase our expertise in new political theories of Islam and society.
Your employment will consist of 60% teaching and 40% research. As far as teaching is concerned, you will be asked to give introductory courses on Islam as well as on the intellectual exchange between the Middle East and Europe. You will also teach a Master’s seminar on contemporary Islam, philosophy and society. Furthermore, you will be closely involved in the development of our prospective Master’s degree programme ‘Islam, Culture and Politics’.

Our Department has a strong track record in attracting funds. In keeping with that tradition, you will be assisted by your new colleagues in developing your own proposals with an eye to generating your own line of research and setting up your own research team.
We are looking for a versatile teacher, researcher and intellectual, who, within a few years, will have become an internationally recognised voice in his/her own field and, at the same time, will contribute to the definition of our Department's future course and orientation.

The vacancy is initially for 0.6 FTE but may be expanded in due course. Our faculty's career policy also defines the conditions for promotion to higher levels of professorship.

Work environment

The Department of Islam Studies is one of the 10 departments of the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies, whose 140 staff provide courses for approximately 700 students. Your research and teaching will in fact take place within the wider field of religious studies, on the one hand, and the undergraduate and graduate programmes in both philosophy and religious studies, on the other hand, which examine the interconnection between philosophy, religion and society. You will also work with colleagues from various disciplines such as Arabic, anthropology, Islam studies, history and political science, both in teaching and in research.

The faculty has an inspiring academic climate. We continuously seek to innovate our socially relevant domain-specific and interdisciplinary education and research programmes. Responsibility, solidarity, care and commitment are values which characterise the faculty’s culture.
