: New College in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a three-year Contractually-Limited Term Appointment (CLTA) at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in the field of Community Engaged Learning. This appointment will begin July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter, and end on June 30, 2022.


The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in any social science or humanities discipline or field at the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a focus on or experience in social justice issues and community engagement. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing strengths.


Candidates must have teaching expertise relevant to community engaged learning in a degree granting program, particularly at the undergraduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures, as well as experience in one-on-one mentoring. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities, as well as significant in-depth experience over more than one year in building relationships with community partners. Where relevant teaching experience is not in courses directly about community engaged learning, candidates must be able to demonstrate the relevance of their teaching experience to community-engaged learning.


Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant and relevant conferences, the teaching dossier including a detailed statement addressing teaching philosophy and experience, sample course syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as four strong letters of reference from referees of high standing reflecting on both excellent teaching and evidence of commitment to pedagogical innovation. At least one of these letters should be from a community partner or agency with whom the candidate has worked extensively.


Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.


Community Engaged Learning at New College is a form of experiential learning which offers students an overview of the social sector, forms of community engagement and social justice work, and takes up questions and themes that emerge from students’ experiences in their placements. Regular, guided reflective practice – in journals and class discussion – encourages the integration of academic and experiential knowledge and supports ethical, personal and career development. Students learn about the practice of community-based research, ethical issues in community-engaged research, methodologies and methods while gaining an understanding of the non-profit sector and the value of research in effecting social change, social policy and service delivery work. The successful candidate will be expected to teach placement based courses at New College on community engaged learning and research, and support community-engaged learning in other classes at New College. This includes developing the placements for the courses. The courses give students an opportunity to explore the social justice import and applications of academic knowledge outside the classroom, and gain experience working for and with organizations, generally non-profits, social enterprise or campus-based social justice initiatives, involved in front-line service provision, community-based research, social justice advocacy, arts-based community building and social enterprise.
