Associate Dean for Academic Programs

Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Programs, Indiana University School of Liberal Arts, at Indianapolis (IUPUI). The mission of IUPUI is to provide excellence in teaching and learning; research, scholarship, and creative activity; and local, national, and global civic engagement. Each of these core activities is characterized by collaboration within and across disciplines and with the community, a commitment to expanding and ensuring diversity, and pursuit of best practices.


The mission of the IU School of Liberal Arts is to create and exchange knowledge that promotes understanding of the human experience. The aspiration of the School is to become a model 21st-century urban liberal arts school and a preferred location for learning and research in the humanities and social sciences.


The position’s responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Academic Program Development, Administration, and Support
• providing support and coordination for curriculum development and revision as needed, including the development and coordination of culturally responsive curricula that engages learners while respecting their cultural integrity, which includes the dynamic mix of race, ethnicity, class, gender, religion, and family that contributes to every student’s cultural identity
• serving as the dean’s office representative to the School of Liberal Arts Undergraduate Curriculum and Standards Committee and the School of Liberal Arts Graduate Curriculum Committee
• leading new program development and approval processes on behalf of the School, including dual degree programs, accelerated BA/graduate programs, and online programs
• working with other schools on joint and multidisciplinary programs
• providing support and coordination for international programs
• coordinating with campus offices and School of Liberal Arts departments and programs on program reviews
• developing and coordinating policies for graduate programs in Liberal Arts
• convening regular meetings with directors of graduate programs in the School of Liberal Arts
• coordinating with campus offices and School of Liberal Arts departments and programs on assessment of student learning, including review of general education courses
• serving as one of the School of Liberal Arts representatives on the IUPUI Program Review and Assessment Committee and writing the school’s annual assessment report to the campus
• representing the School of Liberal Arts on the IUPUI Undergraduate Affairs Committee
• representing the School of Liberal Arts on the IUPUI Graduate Affairs Council and serving as primary author of the annual Block Grant request process to the Graduate Office; advising the dean on the disbursement of the Block Grant
• serving as dean’s office liaison with the IUPUI Graduate Office
• collaborating with the associate dean for student affairs on retention efforts that impact the School
• reporting on academic programs and performance for the School of Liberal Arts
• overseeing course scheduling and enrollment management for the School of Liberal Arts
• working with the dean on course remonstrances among schools at IUPUI and across Indiana University
• working with the Office of Student Affairs on degree map issues as appropriate; also, do the same in relation to transfer credit processes, initiatives, etc.
• working with and serving as dean’s office liaison with the Director of the Bachelor of General Studies Program and the School of Liberal Arts Honors Program

Other
• representing the School of Liberal Arts and the Dean’s office on a number of school and campus committees
• supervising appointed and hourly staff as needed including the Graduate Programs team
• collaborating with the other associate and assistant deans and dean’s office staff on projects in service of the School
• teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in candidate’s academic department or program within Liberal Arts


Basic Qualifications
Qualifications of the Associate Dean: Candidates must have academic qualifications and achievements consistent with an appointment as a tenured full or advanced associate professor in the School of Liberal Arts. Administrative experience, a record of scholarship, evidence of excellent teaching, and a commitment to promoting diversity are required.

Additional Qualifications
Other qualifications include: documented leadership ability such as chairing a department or running a center; nationally recognized record in scholarship; strong interpersonal skills; demonstrated support for and motivation of faculty, students and staff; demonstrated ability to foster high quality teaching and research; commitment to maintaining and promoting institutional change; experience with international programs; demonstrated understanding of technology use in higher education; demonstrated commitment and/or experience in, community engagement; and demonstrated commitment to and/or record of procurement of external funding.
