The College of Education (COE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applications for the position of Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Bureau of Educational Research (BER) from among the tenured and specialized faculty within the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. This is a 0% administrative appointment with a 75% allocation of effort and associated academic year buyout. The primary role for this position is to nurture and support research activities in the College of Education. The Associate Dean actively engages faculty and students to cultivate collaboration, diversity, innovation, and impact through the significant research portfolio of the college. This includes supporting the College of Education’s longstanding commitment to research on issues of social justice, race, and equity in education. The Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Bureau of Educational Research will report to the Dean and work collaboratively with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs, the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, and alongside a talented leadership team to support various college-wide initiatives, to contribute to senior management team decisions, coordinate relations with relevant units in other colleges and external agencies, and establish strategic partnerships in pursuit of new opportunities.

The College of Education maintains a robust and ever-growing sponsored project portfolio. Federal, state, and foundation funding sources include: National Science Foundation, Institute for Education Sciences and other divisions of the U.S. Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, Illinois State Board of Education, Illinois Board of Higher Education, and Illinois Community College Board as well as foundation support such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Spencer Foundation, and The Joyce Foundation.  Advisory to this position, is the College Research Committee which is comprised of an interdisciplinary and cross-departmental selection of faculty who understand the breadth of Education research activities.

Responsibilities: Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Bureau of Educational Research

  • Promote and support faculty research and research education.
  • Identify external funding opportunities and ensure that the college’s overall research and scholarship portfolio is commensurate with the expectations of a Research I, Land Grant University.
  • Represent the College of Education’s research efforts within the University and serve as the primary liaison with campus.
  • Represent the College of Education to external funding agencies and local, national, and international partners.
  • Establish strategic partnerships to secure new research opportunities that are aligned with college faculty expertise.
  • Advance the College of Education’s commitment to social justice, anti-racism, and educational equity.
  • Articulate a compelling and inclusive vision for research and research education in the College of Education and ensure that research is conducted in an ethical and efficient manner.
  • Support College of Education faculty who are in the early stages of seeking externally funded projects and provide continued support for experienced faculty who have current externally funded projects.
  • Provide intellectual leadership to the scholarly activities of the College of Education (e.g., initiate opportunities for scholarly exchange around critical topics, support grant development writing, identify faculty to serve as resources for research efforts and initiatives).
  • Oversee a diverse team of professional staff who are responsible for pre-award services, strategic initiatives, community-academic partnerships for health, and school-university research relations.  
  • Manage content planning for data-driven reports of faculty activity.
  • Supervise the planning and organization of research seminars and internal funding opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the College Research Committee (CRC), assisting with internal research competitions and awards.
  • Provide oversight for internal doctoral fellowship competitions.
  • Work to provide quality and cost-effective research resources and facilities for faculty and students including research space, computing, data, research staff, etc.
  • Coordinate with the Assistant Dean for Advancement on research relationships with alumni, corporate partners, and foundations.
  • Coordinate with the Office for International Programs on research relationships with international partners.
  • Coordinate with Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Associate Dean for Graduate Programs on opportunities for undergraduate/graduate student research and school relationships.

Qualifications: The Associate Dean for Research and Director of the Bureau of Educational Research must be a tenured or specialized faculty member within the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. The successful candidate will be an established researcher with a track history of obtaining external funding, an academic scholar who is engaged in teaching and professional development and has demonstrated effective leadership and administrative skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, as are strong organizational and time management skills. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and openness to the various methodological approaches found in educational research. The ideal candidate would have experience working with or on projects that focus on the experiences of historically minoritized communities.

Starting Date and Salary: The proposed starting date is January 1, 2022. This is twelve-month service appointment, which will be supported with a $20,000 annual administrative stipend paid over twelve months. The appointment is for three years and may be renewed based upon annual assessments and mutual interest.
