Associate Professor in Arts & Crafts


About the position

The Department of Teacher Education has over 360 employees and has a full-time teacher education program for primary and secondary education with approx. 4000 students. The department has a broad portfolio of continuing and further education portfolios for teachers and school leaders and a special offer in bachelor in archive and collection management. Several of the programs are provided in collaboration with other parts of NTNU. The National Center for Mathematics in Education and the National Center for Writing Education and Writing Research are part of the department. NTNU and the Department of Teacher Education are the host institution for the National Research School for Teacher Education (NAFOL). The department has extensive research activity and doctoral education aimed at schools and education.


At the Department of Teacher Education there is a permanent 100% position as Associate Professor in Arts & Crafts.


The person who is employed will belong to the subject section for the art subjects, physical education and sports. The subject section is responsible for teaching primary school teacher education with a master's degree in Arts & Crafts, Physical Education and Music, 2-year master's degree in Art Subject didactics, subject didactics teaching in various art subjects and physical education in practical-pedagogical education and 5-year lecturer education in physical education and sports. Research and development related to bodily learning is a focus area across the subject section. Diversity and inclusion are the focus areas both across the subject section and the department as a whole.


The subject section currently has 39 academic employees with backgrounds in various art subjects, physical education and sports. There are 3 professors, 1 professor II, 6 associate professors, 5 senior lecturers, 18 university lecturers, 5 fellows and 1 scientific assistant.



  • Development of arts & crafts as didactic, artistic and scientific fields.

  • Teach and guide current materials and techniques within the main areas of design, visual communication, digital media, architecture, image, photography and sculpture. In addition, employees will guide and teach art and design history as well as subject didactics. 

  • Research (including possible artistic research) and dissemination work within arts & crafts as didactic, artistic and scientific fields.

  • Development and strengthening of the art subjects in school and teacher education, by entering into a collegial team where bodily learning and aesthetic approach to learning are central to the subjects in the subject section, and beyond it. It is expected of the person who is appointed to be able to enter and contribute to interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary teaching and research collaborations.

  • Supervision of students in different education courses, especially at the master's and PhD level

  • Research dissemination and popular science communication

  • Assessment Work

  • Administrative tasks


The person employed will receive support and guidance during the start-up and throughout the academic year. The person who is employed must abide by the decisions on changes that the development of the subject section entails, as well as organizational changes.


Eligibility Requirements


For the position of associate professor, an employee is sought with both solid scientific, didactic and artistic expertise in the field of arts & crafts.

  • Higher education or university education is required in one subject area that is relevant to arts and crafts, and a doctoral degree (PhD, doctor of arts or PhD in artistic development work) in a subject area that is relevant to arts & crafts.

  • Emphasis will be placed on the ability to initiate and lead research and development work. The publication of research results in recognized international journals within their field of study and / or artistic work in the public domain will be given great weight. The greatest emphasis is placed on scientific works and artistic works over the past five years (depending on the subject tradition).

  • Solid teaching and research qualifications are required in their field of study, which should be relevant for arts & crafts, as well as artistic activities within their own field.

  • Good oral and written skills in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish, as much of the teaching takes place in Norwegian / Nordic and can include practice visits in the Norwegian school / cultural school / the free culture field, as well as guidance of Norwegian / Nordic texts.


Other Requirements:


Educational skills and qualifications will be emphasized. The assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in the scientific works, experience from teaching, doctoral and master's degree guidance and pedagogical background of another kind. Applicants with teaching experience at university level will be preferred. Quality and breadth will be considered.   


Employees without basic vocational qualifications and who cannot document corresponding qualifications are required to undergo approved pedagogical development programs within two years of employment.


The position holder handles the academic responsibility together with the department's other academic staff. The person who is employed is further obliged to participate in the implementation of the teaching program according to the current study plan, and in the work on further development of the subject area and the teaching program, including also continuing and further education. The position holder shall supervise master's and PhD students within their field of study. The person who is hired also has to take part in administrative work. 


Qualifications that are desired and emphasized:

  • Teaching experience from Norwegian or Nordic school, cultural school, the free cultural field and / or high school.

  • Experience from teaching in teacher education or other UH sector.

  • Practical-educational education or equivalent.

The position holder must abide by the decisions regarding changes that the development in the subject entails, and the organizational changes that decisions regarding the university's activities may entail.

Salaries and terms

The position as associate professor, code 1011, is normally paid from gross NOK 515 200, - to NOK. 713 600, - pr. years depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, the statutory 2% deposit is deducted from the Government Pension Fund,


The employment takes place on the terms and conditions that apply at all times to the state's employees, and after hiring you must expect that changes can take place in the work area.


It is a prerequisite that the person being hired settles so that he / she can be present at and available to the institution.

  • Plan for research and artistic development work

  • Information about projects you have been the project manager with with information about financing, duration and size 


Joint work will be taken into account. If it is difficult to identify your efforts in joint work, you must enclose a brief account of your participation.
