General Linguistics is one of the areas of research and teaching at the Department of Linguistics, together with Child Language Development, Computational Linguistics, Phonetics, Swedish Sign Language and Multilingualism in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (do visit the department home page at https://www.ling.su.se/english/). 

General Linguistics brings together theoretical and empirical perspectives on human language in all its manifestations, viewed against a backdrop of linguistic diversity. Research within the General Linguistics section has focused mainly on linguistic typology and language documentation. General Linguistics is taught on all levels (1st, 2nd, 3rd cycle). Among the range of courses and programmes offered at the department is an international Master’s Programme in Language Science with a specialisation in typology and linguistic diversity.

Subject/subject description

General Linguistics with a focus on language documentation

Main responsibilitiesThe position includes teaching (currently 70%), and research and professional development (30%). The teaching will be in the First, Second and Third cycles within General Linguistics. The languages of instruction are Swedish and English, and teaching includes examination, supervision and review of degree theses, course development, and administration. At the present time, the department is keen to reinforce management and administration competencies. It is therefore important that the applicant can demonstrate experience of management and administration of education at university level (e.g. as director of studies/education coordinator or equivalent). The successful applicant will also be expected to conduct research, initiate and lead research projects, and to contribute to external funding of research at the department as well as to the development of the academic subject. Further, the lecturer shall endeavour to publish internationally and to promote the department’s international profile within language documentation.

Qualification requirements

Eligible applicants for the position of senior lecturer in General Linguistics with a focus on language documentation have demonstrable teaching expertise and hold a PhD in General Linguistics or have equivalent scientific competence.

The ability and willingness to teach both in Swedish and in English is a requirement.

A general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people, as well as other general abilities required to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria

In the appointment process, special and equal emphasis is placed on pedagogical, scientific and administrative expertise.

In assessing pedagogical expertise, special emphasis will be placed on documented experience of teaching and pedagogical quality assurance work on a wide range of courses, as well as successful supervision of degree projects. Experience of teaching, supervision and examination of PhD students is a merit.

In assessing scientific expertise, special emphasis will be placed on experience of language documentation in accordance with modern international standards; documented ability to initiate and carry through international collaboration within language documentation in the field; research demonstrating great depth of awareness of issues concerning language documentation; and having successfully planned, applied for and obtained external research funding. Research expertise is to be demonstrated by international publications and presentations at international conferences.

In assessing administrative expertise, special emphasis will be placed on experience of education management, as director of studies (education coordinator) or similar, as well as the ability and willingness to be assigned administrative duties in the department.

The applicant’s expertise in the fields of teaching, science and administration is to be documented in such a way that it allows for qualitative assessment. Further, the applicant is to document ability to collaborate well with colleagues and fellow researchers, ability to collaborate with the surrounding society, nationally and internationally, ability to disseminate research.

Teaching and learning in higher education

It is a merit to have completed at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. An applicant who does not have at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education must complete such training within the first two years of employment. Applicants who consider themselves to have the equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal training must state in their application how the knowledge was acquired and how it corresponds to competence provided by formal training.
