Description

The Centre for Industrial Relations and Human Resources in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Collective Bargaining and Worker Representation.
The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

The successful candidate will be considered for appointment to the endowed USW/Leo Gerard Chair in Collective Bargaining and Worker Representation for a five-year renewable term following a favourable review. The Chair will play a central role in the Centre’s broad network of governmental, union, and industry stakeholders—driving solutions-oriented research and impactful engagement related to collective bargaining, worker and workplace representation, and employee voice.

Qualifications

• PhD in Industrial Relations or a closely related social science discipline.

• A distinguished record of excellence in research and teaching in areas such as worker/workplace representation, collective bargaining, and labour policy.

• An established international reputation and demonstrated ability to sustain an innovative, independent, and externally funded research program.

• Evidence of research excellence, including high-impact publications in top-tier journals, invited presentations, awards, and other notable professional activities.

• Demonstrated research impact in policy, industry, or civil society contexts.

• Excellence in teaching, shown through accomplishments, teaching dossier (including teaching statement, sample materials, and evaluations), and strong reference letters.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

• Conduct innovative and independent research;

• Build partnerships with unions, employers, non-profit organizations, and government;

• Lead national and global conversations on the future of collective bargaining, focusing on private-sector renewal in Canada;

• Teach undergraduate and graduate courses at the St. George campus;

• Supervise master’s and doctoral students;

• Contribute to the Graduate Department of CIRHR through teaching and mentorship.
