The department of Archaeology and Ancient History is a multi-subject department with teaching and research in the subjects of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, Archaeology, Osteology, Egyptology and Global Environmental History. Our environment for education and research is characterised by a wide knowledge base and professionalism. The department works actively for increased cooperation between our disciplines, e.g. in the joint BA programme and in the thematic multidisciplinary research clusters and seminars. The department works both in Uppsala (English Park Campus) and in Visby (Campus Gotland). Egyptology is a natural part of our BA programme and is offered on BA level and on doctorate level. Duties

This position includes teaching, research and administration. Teaching includes course responsibility, course administration and supervision. The position includes teaching and research in equal amounts.The successful applicant should participate in the development of the education in Egyptology with a focus on Ancient Egyptian culture such as history, religion, art, architecture and literature on both first- and second-cycle level. Applicants should be prepared to undertake managerial duties at the department, and is expected to keep abreast of developments in his/her discipline as well as general trends in society as a whole that are of relevance for a member of the university’s faculty.

 

Qualification requirements

Eligible for this post as associate senior lecturer in Egyptology is, according to the higher education ordinance, a person who has obtained a doctoral degree in Egyptology, or who has achieved the equivalent research expertise. Priority should be given to applicants who have obtained their doctoral degree or achieved equivalent competence at the most five years prior to the end of the application period. It is required that the pedagogical skills, scientific competence and professionalism must be relevant for the position’s subject and duties.

 

In addition, according to the Appointment regulations for Uppsala University (AO), pedagogical skills is required and should be shown by merits from education and teaching. To obtain pedagogical skills, the applicant should have participated in teacher training for higher education of relevance to operations at the University, comprising at least five weeks, or be considered to have acquired the equivalent knowledge. Furthermore, according to the employment regulations, a general eligibility requirement is that the applicant must have the personal characteristics required to perform the duties of the post well. Excellent cooperation skills is required. To be eligible for appointment as a teacher an applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. Scientific skills are also demanded and is a required qualification for this recruitment.

 

Assessment

Scientific and pedagogical expertise

When selecting amongst eligible applicants, weight will be given to research expertise and to teaching expertise in equal measures.

 

In assessing research expertise, research quality within the subject of the announcement will be the prime consideration. The scope of research, primarily concerning depth and breadth, must also be afforded consideration. Scientific expertise is i.a. shown by the publication of papers that have contributed to the development of the subject. Further, consideration will be given to the ability to acquire funding for research in competition.

 

In assessing teaching expertise, teaching quality must be the prime consideration. The scope of teaching experience, in terms of both breadth and depth, must also be afforded consideration. Furthermore, consideration must be given to the capacity to plan, initiate, lead, and develop teaching and instruction, as well as the ability to connect research to teaching in respect to research in the subject at hand, subject didactics, as well as teaching and learning in higher education. The ability to interact concerning issues of teaching and learning in higher education with actors inside and outside the University is also included in teaching expertise. A good teaching ability is i.a. shown by good results from course evaluations and evaluations after trial lectures.

 

Other expertise

Administrative expertise: Administrative expertise is also of importance for the position and will be part of the consideration. Administrative competence is shown, for instance, in the ability to plan, organise, and prioritise work in an efficient and goal-oriented manner and in the capacity to set and respect timeframes. Qualifications include overarching operational planning and the ability to manage resources in a manner that reflects the priorities of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History as well as the capacity to work in an organized way with a view to objectives and quality.

 

Cooperation expertise: Cooperation expertise in the shape of interaction both within the subject and with the surrounding society is important for this position and will awarded great consideration. Collaboration expertise is shown by the ability to carry on research cooperation and a good ability to interact with the surrounding society and disseminate information on their activities.

 

Period of employment

The appointment as associate senior lecturer can be held for a maximum of four years. After half the employment period has passed, a guiding evaluation of the position holder’s merits is made. Employment as an associate senior lecturer is intended to provide career development for teaching posts for which higher requirements are placed on competence. If the associate senior lecturer is deemed suitable and meeting the requirements for promotion, upon application s/he shall be promoted and be employed for an indefinite period as a senior lecturer.

 

Promotion to senior lecturer

 

At the completion of the employment as associate senior lecturer, the position holder is eligible to be evaluated for a position as a senior lecturer. To be qualified for such a promotion, the person holding a position as associate senior lecturer would have planned and carried out research that in both quantity and quality shows a considerable progression. This is regardless of the position holder’s merit value at the beginning of the employment. In order to be eligible for promotion, the applicant should be established through their research within the research society both nationally and internationally. It is meritorious to have received funding for research in competition during their time of employment as associate senior lecturer. Consideration will be given to the publication traditions of the subject in question. The evaluation will partly be based on the submitted research plan and whether the applicant can show that the research carried out in following this plan is of high international quality and that it has largely furthered the development of the subject.

 

Furthered, the applicant must have shown excellent teaching expertise by progression in teaching concerning quality, both in depth and breadth, as well as having shown the ability to plan, initiate, lead and develop education and teaching and other pedagogical activities on different levels and with different teaching methods. A documented ability to tie research to teaching in the subject in question is a requirement. Very good teaching ability is shown i.a. through very good results from course evaluations and appraisals from trial lectures.

 

Applicants for promotion should have both a very good ability to collaborate as well as the ability to fulfil the duties of the position to which the applicant aspires, and to have undergone relevant training in university teaching, comprising at least 15 credits, or be deemed to have equivalent knowledge. The very good ability to teach in Swedish and English is a requirement.

 

In this recruitment, the university will consider the person who through a qualitative assessment of the whole picture regarding competence and skills is considered to have the best qualifications for the implementation and development of the tasks in question, and for contributing to a positive development of both education and research in Egyptology and of the department’s activities as a whole.

 

The Recruitment Committee may use interviews, trial lectures and the taking of references. The applicant should therefore provide a list of reference persons who may shed light on their professional skill, as well as personal characteristics that are of significance to the position, such as ability to collaborate, leadership skills and the working methods s/he uses.

 

Personal circumstances (such as parental leave) that in the qualification assessment can be counted in favour of the applicant should be indicated in connection with the presentation of qualifications and experience.
