The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an exceptional jazz bassist, composer and scholar for a full-time clinical assistant professor appointment beginning fall 2019.

Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as three minors in music performance, music theatre, and music studies; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or musicology; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting and performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology, as well as a graduate certificate in theory pedagogy. This Clinical Assistant Professor of jazz bass will strengthen the broader vision of the School of Music: to create an environment that enriches and enlivens the role of music in our society. The jazz faculty is committed to developing 21st century musicianship skills, producing outstanding musicians, and training capable teachers, music educators and music therapists. Additionally the faculty is dedicated to recruiting and nurturing outstanding students who, upon completion of their degrees, are prepared, through their creative endeavors, to lead the profession. Many of our graduates are successful performers and teachers regionally, nationally and internationally, attesting to the quality and comprehensiveness of our jazz studies program. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director of Jazz Studies to administer the Ravenscroft Jazz Resident Artist Program. The Ravenscroft Jazz Resident Artist Program at ASU is a mentorship and community engagement program that connects renowned jazz artist/mentors with the community and outstanding ASU Ravenscroft Graduate Jazz Fellows who attend ASU on full scholarship to fulfill the school’s mission of enriching the Greater Phoenix community through music.

 

The successful candidate is expected to teach an undergraduate and graduate studio of bassists; provide class and individual instruction in jazz bass repertoire, jazz composition, and jazz pedagogy; and coach jazz combos. Additionally, s/he will be expected to mentor and assist students in developing their professional goals and serve on student committees; continuously and assertively advance their creative and/or research portfolio; and actively contribute to the School of Music’s recruiting efforts by attracting high-quality students regionally, nationally and internationally. Other responsibilities will include working effectively with faculty colleagues in service to satisfy and advance the mission of the ASU School of Music and the Ravenscroft Jazz Resident Artist Program.

 

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

  • DMA degree in Double Bass Performance;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching applied jazz bass, jazz composition, jazz ensembles, and jazz pedagogy;
  • Evidence of excellence in creative achievement as demonstrated through professional performances, presentations, and/or publications.
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and service.

Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated success in one or more of the following areas:

  • National/international recognition in creative activity and/or scholarship;
  • Teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, including jazz pedagogy and repertoire;
  • Experience coaching jazz combos and big bands;
  • Evidence of outstanding performance experience as a jazz bassist;
  • Interdisciplinary creative activity within and outside of the arts;
  • Evidence of teaching and serving as clinician in community music programs
  • Evidence of success in recruitment of prospective students
  • Experience with educational program administration
