XE: Experimental Humanities & Social Engagement, an interdisciplinary master’s program housed in the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University, invites applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor whose research and teaching lies at the intersection of literature and philosophy, with a focus on experimental genres, the relationship between aesthetics and nationalisms, and an ability to creatively teach and mentor students interested in critical theory. The appointment is expected to begin September 1, 2022, pending budgetary and administrative approval. 

XE fosters the combination of creativity and criticality with a keen interest in social engagement of various forms. We seek outstanding interdisciplinary scholars whose work may not neatly align with traditional disciplines, who are committed to exploring new pedagogies, to program building and curricular innovation, and to contributing centrally to the intellectual and creative cultures of a tightly-knit community of experimental thinkers and makers. Candidates may use and combine methodologies from the fields of comparative literature, performance studies, art history, history, sociology, cultural studies, creative writing, and politics, ideally working to expand the literary canon to help students reimagine ideas of realism, everyday life, archives and evidence, and the politics of world literature.

Candidates must be committed to interdisciplinary scholarship and practice. Candidates must also demonstrate excellence in teaching and mentorship. While PhDs are required, candidates may also be practicing artists or public-facing intellectuals, with a strong critical practice in the field of literature and philosophy. XE is a stand-alone, student-centered master’s program and clinical faculty teach three courses per semester, advise and mentor students, organize public programs, and participate actively in shaping the life of the program.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, three letters of recommendation, a statement of research and teaching interests, and a diversity and inclusion statement.

Shortlisted candidates will also be asked to submit: recent course evaluations, a writing sample, and two sample syllabi, one of a class of your choosing and one for XE’s introductory course, “Interdisciplinarity,” which models research methods that emerge from the instructor’s own scholarly and creative practice and helps students develop as interdisciplinary scholars.

Your statement might expand on how you have gone about fostering inclusion and building pathways in your discipline and practice by telling the committee about programs you have founded or participated in, including but not limited to:

  • Creating an inclusive and accessible classroom/course (including developing your skills for doing this)
  • Working with campus organizations that support underrepresented, first-generation, differently-abled or non-traditional undergraduate or graduate students
  • Developing discipline or area-specific pathways to majors for such students
  • Mentoring individual students, faculty or staff from diverse backgrounds
  • Training international students or mentoring faculty from developing countries
  • Working with your national scholarly organization on diversity, inclusion or equity issues
  • Broadening the influence of your work for the public and enhancing underserved communities by participating in K-12 classroom, museums, or other afterschool programming aimed at fostering general education, excitement, and possibility (particularly in underserved populations)
  • Participating in prison education or other adult education programs that serve under-resourced populations
  • Developing educational programming through the media or social media
  • Bringing results of research back to local or international communities
  • Engaging in community activities around education, social justice, equity, and inclusion.
