The Department of Music, School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a teaching stream contractually limited appointment in Classical Piano Performance at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, to commence July 1, 2022 for a three-year term. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and to provide creative leadership and support in the departments initiatives to enhance teaching and learning through pedagogical innovation and curricular development. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD (or a PhD near completion) or specialized doctorate (such as an DMA) or MA/MFA, with an active record of professional experience in classical piano performance is expected.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence, or the promise of excellence, in teaching university-level courses including a commitment to pedagogy and student success as evidenced through: the teaching statement; teaching evaluations; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning and community-based learning; and strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will demonstrate a versatile practice reflecting the expanding nature of classical piano within a broader musical landscape; oversee the classical piano area, including private instruction and supervision of Masters students; and complement existing strengths within the program by contributing to other curricular areas.

The Department seeks a dynamic individual who will incorporate theoretical and practice-based frames of reference with a diverse range of experience to prepare musicians for the future. This might include experience In collaborative piano, creative cross-disciplinary projects, community engaged performance, musical syntheses incorporating classical music with popular musics, jazz and Black musical expression, and/or global music styles. We also welcome candidates with additional expertise in enhanced digital and technological learning, which is fast changing the opportunities for growth in the music field.

Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
