Overview

The Frost School of Music at the University of Miami seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as Dean and chief administrative officer of the School. Reporting directly to the Provost, the Dean provides strategic vision, operational leadership, and advocacy for the School’s programs, faculty, staff, and students. With an annual operating budget of approximately $30 million, the Dean oversees 120 faculty and 50 staff, guiding efforts in creative and artistic accomplishment, scholarship, pedagogy, and community engagement.


Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Vision & Leadership: Develop and implement an ambitious, shared vision for the School, fostering a cohesive identity across 12 departments.

  • Financial Management: Ensure financial health and sustainability, guide operational efficiency, and lead fundraising and revenue development initiatives.

  • Faculty & Staff Development: Recruit, develop, and champion world-class faculty and staff, supporting professional growth and excellence.

  • Operational Infrastructure: Assess and enhance administrative structures, processes, promotion pathways, resource allocation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Community Engagement: Cultivate partnerships across Miami-Dade County and South Florida, including programs such as Donna E. Shalala MusicReach, Frost Preparatory Program, and Frost Summer Experience.

  • National & Global Presence: Serve as a public ambassador, elevating the School’s reputation, visibility, and impact nationally and internationally.

  • University Collaboration: Strengthen connections with other University of Miami colleges and schools to foster cross-disciplinary opportunities for faculty and students.


Qualifications

  • Demonstrated record of successful leadership in higher education or music institutions.

  • Visionary, innovative, and collaborative approach to leadership; ability to build consensus among diverse stakeholders.

  • Established fundraising experience and public relations capabilities.

  • Commitment to recruiting, retaining, and developing distinguished faculty and staff.

  • Appreciation for the student experience and knowledge of contemporary trends in music education and careers.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to navigate complex academic and administrative environments.

  • Nationally or internationally recognized musical, professional, or scholarly accomplishments.

  • Earned doctoral or terminal degree preferred; credentials for full professor appointment required.
