The UCLA Department of Music invites applications for an Assistant Adjunct Professor and Interim Director of Athletic Bands. Temporary, part-time (80% annualized) position plus benefits and summer compensation. Salary commensurate with applicant qualifications and experience. This is not a tenure-track position.

Responsibilities include:

• Teach and direct the UCLA Bruin Marching Band (fall quarter) and UCLA Varsity (basketball and other sports) Band (winter and spring quarters)

• Conduct the UCLA Symphonic Band (winter and spring quarters)

• Coordinate programming and design of repertoire and shows

• Oversee the associate director, assistant director, student staff, and band fraternal organizations in the logistical operation of the athletic bands, including scheduling, budget, licensing, contracts, travel, uniform and equipment inventory and maintenance, attendance, and recruiting

• Lead athletic bands instructional staff and supervise Academic Student Employees (graduate teaching assistants) assigned to the athletic bands

• Audition band members and select student staff and leaders

• Collaborate with director of bands and wind ensemble conductor to support and sustain a comprehensive university band program

• Contribute to the research and service missions of the department, including creative activity and engagement with school bands and professional organizations

Required qualifications: Master’s degree in conducting or music education or equivalent professional experience; at least three to five years of proven success directing and teaching marching and concert bands; demonstrated ability to organize, communicate with, and lead a large and diverse group of students, teaching assistants, and staff.

Recommended qualifications: Doctorate in conducting or music education; experience with an NCAA Division I athletic program, including tournament/bowl game travel; ability as an arranger and/or drill designer for marching band and/or drum corps; experience working with campus events and external/community performances.
