Departmental Lecturer – Egyptology

Grade 7: £32,236 - £39,609 p.a.

 

We are seeking an excellent scholar specialising in the field of Old, Middle and Late Egyptian texts and culture, to join the internationally-renowned academic team in Egyptology at Oxford. You will engage in advanced study in Egyptology, and primarily will lecture and teach undergraduate and graduate students. These teaching responsibilities will require approximately 10 - 12 hours per week contact time with students during term.

 

The lecturer will prepare and deliver lectures and teaching in classes and small groups for undergraduates and graduate students. This will include classes in Old, Middle and Late Egyptian texts and culture. He/she will set and mark examinations and projects, supervise dissertations, and assist with admissions at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The lecturer will co-operate with colleagues over administrative arrangements, including assisting with the organisation of the syllabus. He/she will be prepared to support students as required, acting as a point of contact for them. She/he will also conduct advanced independent scholarly research and otherwise contribute to current research, including by publication and presentation, and by participation in the activities of the Egyptology and Ancient Near East Subject Group.

 

With a doctorate, by the time the post commences, in a closely relevant field, you will be able to show both aptitude for and experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate level. You will demonstrate a solid knowledge of Old to New Kingdom Egypt, with the ability to teach Egyptian history; in addition you will be able to teach aspects of the history and civilisation of ancient Egypt. You will have a record of publication appropriate to your career, showing a commitment to communicating research in this field. Your excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills will be coupled with a willingness to take on appropriate administrative tasks.

 

This is a full-time post for a fixed-period of 2 years, covering the sabbatical leave of two permanent colleagues.
