An 18-month research and teaching appointment in World Literature in English, including postcolonial literature and theory, is available for an outstanding academic at an early stage of their career. The purpose of the post is to provide teaching cover for Professor Elleke Boehmer who will be on research leave funded by a British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellowship and a Global Challenges research funded project from October 2019 to March 2021.


The postholder will be expected to deliver up to 36 hours of Faculty lectures or classes per year. The main focus of the Departmental Lecturer’s Faculty teaching responsibilities will be contributing to the core A course and teaching a C (option) course for the MSt in World Literatures in English, and undergraduate class teaching for FHS Paper 6 (Special Option) as well as offering undergraduate lectures, both stand-alone and as part of series, on aspects of postcolonial, global Anglophone and world literature in English. They will also act as co-convenor for the MSt in World Literature, and will supervise graduate and undergraduate dissertations.


The successful candidate must possess a doctorate in World Literature in English or a related field, must have experience of undergraduate teaching and possess excellent interpersonal and organisational skills. They should also have a research and publication record, appropriate to their career stage, in world literature and/or related subjects.


It is anticipated that the appointee will take up the post on 1 October 2019.


Candidates shortlisted for interview will be asked to submit a sample of written work in advance of the interviews, and will be requested to give a short presentation as part of the assessment process.
