The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills.

Doctoral Candidate, Photography Research


We are looking for a post-graduate student to work on her/his Doctor of Arts degree at Aalto ARTS, Department of Media. The candidate is expected to pursue his/her Doctor of Arts degree in photography and to concentrate his or her activity in at least one of the following fields:

  • Practice-based or Artistic Research

  • Photography Theory

  • Photographic Practices in Contemporary Art

  • Contemporary Photography.


The position is fixed-term and will be filled for 24 months. The starting date is 1st of September 2018.

Main duties and responsibilities of the doctoral candidate


Full time doctoral candidate is expected to complete her/his Doctor of Arts in four years, during which he/she should complete his/her DA thesis and doctoral studies, participate in research projects, and teach relevant courses. 


In addition, the selected doctoral candidate will be expected to participate actively in the development of funding applications in order to advance in his/her research work, extend his/her international networks and create the economic conditions for the possible extension of his/her contract.

Key selection criteria

  • A Masters level degree in photography, visual studies, art theory or another relevant field

  • A postgraduate study place in Aalto University (Doctoral Program of Arts, Design and Architecture) or apply for it at the same time as he/she applies for the Doctoral Candidate Position. In the latter case, the assessment of the application for the Candidate Position will be dependent on the previous acceptance of the Doctoral candidate by the Doctoral Committee of the Department of Media and the Aalto School of ARTS (application deadline is March 28th 2018, see

  • Research and practice experience in the before mentioned fields

  • Experience in grant writing and project management

  • Ability for collaborative work in research-related contexts

  • Excellent skills in English

  • Advanced knowledge in Photoshop and InDesign is considered as an advantage.


The monthly salary will be paid according to the University’s salary scheme, depending on the candidate’s expertise and tasks, from 2300 eur upwards. The position will be located at Aalto ARTS’s new building Väre in Otaniemi, Espoo.
