The Faculty of Arts is seeking to fill a full-time (100%) vacancy in the Department of Applied Linguistics/Translators & Interpreters for a


Doctoral Grant by the University Research Fund (BOF) in the area of Translation Studies


You will work on the doctoral research project entitled “Subtitles for access to education: Exploring the impact of intralingual and interlingual subtitling of L2 English university lectures on cognitive load and comprehension”. This project aims to verify in an experimental study using eyetracking and questionnaires what the effect is of English (intralingual) and Dutch (interlingual) subtitles on the comprehension of and cognitive load posed by English lectures on Flemish university students who have different proficiency levels of English. You will work on this doctoral research project within the TricS research group.


Job description

  • You prepare a doctoral thesis in the field of Translation Studies.

  • You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.

  • You contribute to teaching and research in the Department of Applied Linguistics/Translators & Interpreters and the TricS research group.


Profile and requirements

  • You hold a master degree in Translation, Interpreting, Language & Literature, Linguistics, Psychology, or equivalent.

  • You can submit outstanding academic results.

  • You have a good command of English and Dutch.

  • Knowledge of SPSS or R and Excel is recommended.

  • Some experience in eyetracking is desirable.

  • Some affinity with research into cognitive load is considered an asset.

  • Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

  • Foreign candidates are encouraged to apply.

  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.

  • You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.


We offer

  • a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a further two-year period after positive evaluation;

  • the start date of the scholarship will be October 1st 2019;

  • a gross monthly grant ranging from € 2.373,36 to € 2.516,73;

  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
