Doctoral positions in Craft, Design, and Artistic Practice

Diary id:PAR 2020/572
Employment level:Fixed term
Location:HDK-Valand
Apply by:2020-06-05

We provide highly specialised degree programmes in an outgoing, international environment – where our unique and broad range of subjects also enables our students and staff to foster a broader artistic perspective, as well as to explore new working models and research fields.

Together with our sister department – the Academy of Music and Drama – we form the most broad-ranging faculty of arts in Scandinavia.

HDK-Valand invites applications to conduct artistic research at doctoral (Third cycle) level. This is our first call for doctoral applications since the merger of HDK and Valand Academy in January 2020; we are now able to welcome applications to any of our three subjects, Craft, Design, and Artistic Practice (which includes film, photography, fine art and literary composition). Two or more successful applicants will begin their study from January 2021.

Our acclaimed academic staff have both breadth and depth in supervisory expertise. We are also able to accommodate multi-disciplinary projects.

To learn more about our areas of specialisation, please check our website for doctoral education https://hdk-valand.gu.se/english/education/doctoral-education   and our website for research https://www.hdk-valand.gu.se/english/research and the personal profiles of individual professors and researchers in each subject area https://akademinvaland.gu.se/digitalAssets/1770/1770354_hdkv-draft-phd-recruitment-guidelines-2020_final.pdf

Proposals should demonstrate a good fit with expertise in the academy.

We have an expansive understanding of the practices which are represented within each of our subject areas, and we welcome proposals which seek to define or identify new forms of practice within these disciplines. Likewise, we encourage engagements with contemporary theorisations of knowledge and critical agency. Research into forms of curation, exhibition and participation is also invited.

There is an expectation that doctoral students will teach for a maximum of 20% of their contracted time.

HDK-Valand is also togher with the Academy of Music and Drama running a reseach school for the doctoral students in artistic subjects, see more here: https://konst.gu.se/english/education/doctoral_studies/research_school
