The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have some 700 employees and around 4000 students.

The Department of Educational Sciences is part of the Faculties of Humanities and Theology at Lund University. Researchers at the department conducts research in the field of educational sciences with a number of different specialisations, including subject didactics, higher education and school and educational history and sociology. The department cooperates with a number of schools and school authorities. It is also the central hub in the extensive network of the Teacher Education at Lund University. The department also includes the Division for Higher Education Development (AHU), which offers courses for teachers at Lund University and conducts higher education development work in areas such as e-learning.

Educational History

School- and educational history studies learning, education, training, education, Education reforms and teaching in a historical perspective. The focus can be towards social- or cultural history and education, change of and ideas about teaching or of teaching spaces, debates and conflicts about education and the goals of education, and significance or of the education's organization and forms of ownership nationally or Internationally. The department is part of the educational history network formed in Uppsala 2005. There is also strong educational history competence at Lund University, where we also see the importance of connecting and having an active exchange with international research environments. As there is a strong integration between postgraduate education and the Teacher Education at LU, educational history is a central field of knowledge both in postgraduate education in Educational science and in the teacher education.

Practice-based School Research

The ULF project (Education, Learning, Research) is a five-year national pilot project that develop models for research collaboration between higher education institutions and schools. In Lund, a research collaboration has been built up between Lund University and Lund Municipality's five municipal upper secondary schools. The project in Lund is run by the coordination group for practice-based research at the Department of Educational Sciences, which has received funding for three research projects and partial funding for a two-year postdoctoral position. The project also includes upper secondary school teachers, some of whom have PhDs. Involved researchers within the department have formed a research group consisting of five researchers and one doctoral student. More information on practice-based school research here:

Professional Education and Training in Higher Education

The department collaborates with Chalmers University of Technology and University of Borås in an effort to develop professional education and training in Swedish higher education, which includes educational programmes for professional degrees (e.g. “engineering” and “teacher education”), programmes within “fine, applied and performing arts”, and “doctoral education”. Depending on identified needs for knowledge within such educational programmes, the doctoral students’ project could focus on learning, teaching, social conditions, organisational processes, politics and policy implementation etc. The research is expected to be of direct relevance for strengthening professional education and training, and could be both theoretically and practically oriented. Present research at the Department of educational sciences includes projects on “teacher education” and “doctoral education”. However, research on other forms of professional education and training in higher education is also welcome.

Doctoral education. Departmental work, such as teaching and administrative tasks, can be assigned.

The selection process will primarily take into account the applicants’ ability to benefit from third cycle studies. This is assessed from the criteria quality, quantity, progression and relevance.

The application must include:

- records of first- and second-cycle studies (Ladok transcript or other transcript of courses and grades)

- first- and second-cycle theses/degree projects

- a list of other relevant administrative and educational qualifications

- scholarly journal articles, reports or papers of relevance for the subject

- where applicable, documented skills in a language of relevance for the research studies

- project proposal (1500 words max. excluding references)
