The Department of Translators and Interpreters in the Faculty of Arts is looking for a full-time (100%) doctoral scholarship holder in the field of Second Language Acquisition (German)


  • You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis in the field of Second Language Acquisition.
  • You will conduct corpus-based research on the writing skills of advanced learners of L2 German, investigating how learners (as compared with native speakers) establish lexical and grammatical cohesion in their academic writing. Using novel corpus-based methods, you will contribute to advancing the theoretical knowledge of learner language by identifying characteristics of cohesion in academic learner language that are dependent and independent of the learners´ mother tongue (Dutch).
  • You will publish scientific articles related to the research project.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching and research support tasks for the German section at the Department of Translators and Interpreters.


  • You hold a master's degree in Linguistics or Applied Linguistics (or equivalent) or you will have obtained it by the time you start your position.
  • You can present outstanding academic results.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision.
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty's and university's research policies.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You have an excellent command of written German (level C2 of the CEFR) and a good command of written English (level C1). Knowledge of Dutch will be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrable experience with corpuslinguistic research will be considered an asset.

What we offer

  • We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of two years. Following a positive evaluation, the scholarship can be renewed once for another two-year period.
  • The planned start date is 1 October 2020 or as soon as possible after that date.
  • Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
  • You will do most of your work at Stadscampus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
