The appointment is for a fixed term (1 September 2019–30 August 2022).

The duties of the doctoral student include dissertation work and the completion of doctoral studies. The doctoral student will carry out research related to education in the Connected Classroom Nordic (CCN) project. CCN is part of the Nordic Centre of Excellence: Quality in Nordic Teaching (QUINT), funded by NordForsk (see https://www.uv.uio.no/quint/english/).

The doctoral student’s duties also include teaching and other tasks. Teaching may account for up to 5% of the annual workload.

The purpose of the Connected Classroom Nordic project is to explore quality in teaching by bringing together researchers, teachers and pupils in a collaborative, video-based longitudinal study with a focus on the digitalised classroom in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland. The study will concentrate on the school subjects L1 (native language), mathematics and social studies in years 7–9. The doctoral research project must be linked to this research area and based on a comparative approach to data from at least two Nordic countries. A special focus will be on cooperation between research environments relating to the digitalisation of teaching at Karlstad University and the University of Helsinki. A degree with a specialisation in the digitalisation of education or the professional development of teachers, or documentation of experience in these areas is considered a merit. Specialisation in other research areas relevant to QUINT is also considered a merit.

The appointee must hold the right to complete a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the beginning of employment. If the applicant does not hold the right to complete a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki, he or she must separately apply for it (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/the-application-p...).

The completion of the duties associated with the position requires good oral and written skills in Finnish or Swedish and good English skills. Fluency in another Scandinavian language is considered a merit.

When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to scientific publications in education and other scientific activity as well as teaching experience and pedagogical training.

The salary for the position will be based on level 2 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The monthly salary will be approximately €2,100−2,400, depending on the appointee’s experience and scholarly qualifications. A trial period of six months will be applied.
