The George Mason University Department of English invites applications for a twelve-month position directing the Northern Virginia Writing Project. About the Northern Virginia Writing Project:

The Northern Virginia Writing Project (NVWP), housed in the English Department of George Mason University, is a legacy site of the National Writing Project that has been in existence for 40 years since 1978. The mission of NVWP is to fulfill the purpose of all writing project affiliated sites, which is based on two tenets: first, that teachers are the best teachers of teachers; second, that all teachers of writing must write.

NVWP provides the area’s educational community with a set of ongoing programs that develop educators as writers and as leaders; it has also run programs for young writers in grades one through twelve. NVWP programs are open to all educators across grade levels (PK-20) and across content areas and specialties.


The job of the director is to create an ongoing sustainable organization that develops a growing network of connected educators, teacher-writers, and student writers in its territory, which includes public and private schools in Alexandria, Arlington, Loudoun, Manassas, Prince William, Fairfax, Stafford, Spotsylvania, Caroline, and Fredericksburg. The focus of the position is on educator program recruitment, funding, and the development of relationships related to the teaching of writing and teaching with writing.


The director oversees the administration of all NVWP programs for educators and young writers, which are run by teacher consultants (TCs), both paid and volunteers. TCs are educators who have gained experience with and are committed to the Writing Project tenets, traditionally by having participated in an intensive NVWP Summer Institute.


In this position, the new director will be asked to revise and update the existing Institute model, including length and span, funding model, credit model, platform (face-to-face/hybrid/online, mixed), recruitment, and Institute administration. In addition, the director will coordinate the development of new continuity models for existing and new teacher leaders and teacher-writers.


The director also will oversee the revision and implementation of NVWP’s set of programs including:
• Young Writers Programs (camps, workshops, publications)
• Developing and overseeing an outreach plan for the Project overall (social media, website, advertising)
• Organizing the annual one-day Language and Learning Conference
• Coordinating with and developing partnerships among educational institutions, community organizations, and teacher-educator organizations such as the Secondary School Writing Centers Association (SSWCA)
The director is the central administrator and point person for all administrative functions, including overseeing budgets and familiarity with Mason administrative procedures. Currently, a part-time administrator is available to NVWP for administrative paperwork.


The NVWP director will report to the Chair of the Mason English Department and will have a 2:2 teaching load (Fall and Spring), usually Introductory Composition (English 101) or Advanced Composition (English 302), with other choices by request and based on experience.


This is a 12-month English term faculty position.

Required Qualifications:
• MA in writing-relevant field, e.g., composition, literature, writing/rhetoric, education, or a closely related field
• A minimum of 5 years teaching experience that includes significant classroom writing instruction (any content area)
• Knowledge of budgets and administrative organization
• Strong technology ability, including knowledge of or ability to master multiple software programs and platforms
• Ability to work occasional evenings and occasional weekend days

Preferred Qualifications:
• Terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., MFA) in writing-relevant field, e.g., composition, literature, writing/rhetoric, education, creative writing or a closely related field
• Writing Project Teacher Consultant from any site nationwide or demonstrable knowledge of National Writing Project principles
• Demonstrated leadership in managing or developing relationships with educators and colleagues
• Knowledge of surrounding school districts and/or other VA or National Writing Project sites
