Responsibilities include teaching, conducting research, engaging in service, and serving as chair for the growing EECE major. This leadership role includes: supervising course scheduling and sequencing, mentoring colleagues, liaising with the College of Education at Penn State University Park, and representing and advocating for the major to internal and external constituent groups. Rank of hire depends on current rank and scholarly record. Initial term for serving as chair is five years. The ideal candidate will possess a record of excellent college teaching, scholarly publications commensurate with a tenured position, evidence of program development and leadership at the college level, and a minimum of four years of elementary/early childhood teaching experience. In addition to the leadership role, this position will be responsible for the supervision/overseeing of preservice teachers in PK-4 settings, conducting concurrent seminars in professional development, and offering courses in one of the following areas: science, literacy, special education, and/or ESL/ELL. A doctorate in elementary education, a related discipline, or one of the aforementioned teaching areas is required. All requirements must be met by the start date. Penn State Erie, the Behrend College is an undergraduate and graduate college of The Pennsylvania State University. We are situated on a beautiful, wooded, 854-acre hillside campus with four academic schools (Business; Engineering; Humanities and Social Sciences; and, Science) and an on-campus childcare center. With 5,000 students, we retain the ambience and the focus on teaching of a small college while having access to the research resources of a Big 10, R1 University. We seek faculty members who are committed both to teaching and scholarship and who value and support collaboration, respect, diversity, and inclusiveness. We pride ourselves on offering our undergraduates real-life, open-laboratory, research experiences. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences has about 80 full-time faculty members, offers ten bachelor’s degrees (Arts Administration; Communication; Creative Writing; Digital Media, Arts, and Technology; Elementary and Early Childhood Education; English; General Arts and Sciences; History; Political Science; and Psychology) and one master’s degree (Applied Clinical Psychology.) The school is also home to the languages and the arts. Technology and inter-library loan resources are excellent; internal funds are available for scholarly activity. The School supports a growing, all-campus interest in research that addresses issues of women’s health or energy & sustainability. The College also offers a Secondary Education-Mathematics degree located in the School of Science. Erie, Pennsylvania, a metropolitan area on Lake Erie, with more than a quarter of a million people, is a major tourism, medical, industrial, and service area two hours from Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo. We offer four seasons with cultural, sports, and recreational resources available year ‘round. Our summers are known for festivals, miles of beaches, and water sports, while our winters provide ample opportunity for snow sports. Erie’s cost of living is modest, housing is affordable, and there are four other colleges in the region. Required application materials include: (a) a cover letter addressing the specifics of the position described above, including information about your teaching philosophy and approach to leadership, (b) evidence of successful university teaching, (c) a curriculum vitae, and (d) three letters of reference. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. If you have never applied for a Penn State job before, you will need to create a Friends of Penn State Account. Thereafter, you will be able to upload the required application materials a-c. Please have the three letters of reference sent directly to jobdocs@psu.edu with the job number in the subject line.
