Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada, and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Interior Design in The Creative School at (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor effective July 1, 2023, subject to final budgetary approval. The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, scholarly research or creative activity and service duties, while maintaining an inclusive, equitable and collegial work environment across all activities. Teaching duties will involve both the undergraduate and graduate level, supervision of graduate students in our new Master of Interior Design (MID I and MID II) programs, and active participation in curriculum development. The successful candidate will pursue a strong, innovative program of scholarly research or creative activity that is externally funded and produces impactful, cutting-edge, high-quality results. 

A strength of the program is our immersive approach to design problems. Students are challenged at a very early stage in their interior design education by extensive projects in place-making within both local and global contexts. The successful candidate will be a strong designer who can help shape our comprehensive design studios and contribute to the development, discourse and teaching of our technology (IRT) sequence of classes. The IRT sequence explores building codes, sustainability, construction details, integrated building systems, materials, lighting and finishes; it is a critical component of the education of well-rounded interior designers. 

Candidates must hold either a  terminal professional degree [e.g. MID or MFA] in interior design or an undergraduate degree in interiors [e.g. BID or BFA] along with a terminal graduate degree in design or a related field, by the appointment date. The professional degrees must be CIDA-accredited or the equivalent from a foreign jurisdiction. Candidates holding a professional degree in other closely related fields [e.g. architecture] may be considered. NCIDQ certification and ARIDO licensure will be a requirement for achieving tenure, and the successful candidate will therefore be required to demonstrate either completion of these qualifications or that they are in progress. 

In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of the following: 

  • strong emerging scholarly research or creative activities that are current, innovative and impactful, as evidenced by a research and creative scholarship portfolio. Your portfolio may include, but is not limited to, professional work, peer-reviewed publications, grants, creative scholarship and other writing or creative production that contributes to the visibility and prominence of the discipline;  
  • an emerging or mature research agenda in one or more of the following areas: expanded, critical or future design practices; advanced fabrication technologies; or design at the service of environmental or social justice;  
  • potential for teaching excellence in comprehensive studios, as evidenced by a teaching portfolio that includes examples of student work that showcase design and technical knowledge of the interior design profession;  
  • a commitment to our values of equity, diversity and inclusion as it pertains to service, teaching and scholarly research or creative activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population;  
  • an ability and willingness to contribute to the life of the School of Interior Design and the university through collegial service.
