Job description

The assignment has a structural character in the three core activities of tenured academic staff: teaching, research and service.

  • You will be assigned the following lecturing duties:You will supervise students who are writing their Bachelor and Master theses.
    • Interpreting Studies (MAT, 2025FLWTOL, 3 SP)
    • Consecutive interpreting French-Dutch and Dutch-French (section French-Dutch, MAT, 2011FLWTOL, 6 SP)
    • Simultaneous interpreting French-Dutch (MAT, 2030FLWTOL, 3 SP)
    • Interpreting techniques (section remote interpreting, MAT, 2023FLWTOL, 6 SP)
    • Speechmaking, Interpreting and Peer Assessment (MAT, 2022FLWTOL, 3 SP)
    • Interpreting skills French-Dutch (BA3, 1163FLWTTA, 3 SP)
    • Translation and Interpreting Studies (section Interpreting Studies, BA2, 1141FLWTTA, 3 SP)
  • You will conduct research in the field of Interpreting Studies, with a strong focus on the use of technology in interpreting practice, interpreting training and interpreting research (e.g. telephone remote interpreting, video remote interpreting, computer-assisted interpreting) and within the French language department.
  • Your research will be in line with the profile and vision of the research group Translation, Interpreting and Intercultural Studies (TricS).
  • You will acquire and manage external funding.
  • You will contribute to the development of teaching, research and scientific service (to the wider community) within the department of Applied Linguistics/Translation & Interpreting.
  • You will be required to offer scientific services, both inside (e.g., membership of the Education Board, the Examination Board) and outside of the university (e.g., membership of scientific and professional organisations).

 Profile and requirements

  • You hold a doctorate (PhD) in Translation Studies, Linguistics or Literature (or equivalent) with a strong focus on Interpreting Studies, with French and Dutch as working languages.
  • Research on the use of technology in the interpreting process and teaching (e.g. technology for distance interpreting, computer-assisted interpreting, etc.) will be an asset.
  • You are a native speaker of Dutch and have an excellent command of Dutch, in both its written and oral forms.
  • You have an excellent (near-native) command of French.
  • Demonstrable experience with research and/or academic teaching in Interpreting Studies is strongly recommended.
  • Demonstrable experience with teaching interpreting courses from French into Dutch is strongly recommended.
  • Demonstrable practical experience with interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous French-Dutch), is strongly recommended.
  • A master or postgraduate in simultaneous interpreting will be considered an asset.
  • A network with professional partners in the field (authorities and private sector) will be considered an asset.
  • An international network within Interpreting Studies will be considered an asset.
  • The focus in your teaching corresponds with the educational vision of the university.
  • Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
  • You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).
  • You are quality-orientated, conscientious, creative and cooperative.

We offer

  • either a position with a structural assignment as a lecturer, in a temporary appointment in the tenure-track system for a term of five years. This position will lead to an immediate permanent appointment as a senior lecturer if performance is assessed favourably on the basis of previously fixed and publicly announced evaluation criteria;
  • or a position with a structural assignment as a senior lecturer or higher, generally entailing a permanent appointment. In the case of a first appointment to the corps of academic personnel (ZAP), the university board may proceed to a temporary appointment for a period not exceeding three years. This position will lead to a permanent appointment if performance is assessed favourably;
  • the date of appointment will be 15th September 2020;
  • a full-time gross monthly salary ranging for a lecturer from € 4.255,06 - € 6.272,13, and for a senior lecturer from € 4.872,61 - € 7.654,80;
  • a dynamic and stimulating work environment.
