Faculty Position in Orchestral Studies

The School of Music at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the area of Orchestral Studies.

Duties: Responsibilities include, in varying proportions: a) directing the orchestra, opera orchestra and/or string orchestra of the University of Ottawa, b) teaching activities (e.g., conducting, chamber music, orchestral repertoire, performance practice) at the undergraduate and graduate levels; c) scholarly activities revealed by research and/or artistic creation and/or professional engagements; d) academic service activities, e) supervision of graduate students.

  • The successful candidate will be expected to train both undergraduate and graduate students. A critical aspect of these expectations will be the provision of teaching, research, and mentoring for students enrolled at the University, with the goal of attracting and developing future conductors.
  • There will be a clear expectation of ongoing research activity in the form of performance and research activities. The candidate will be expected to implement a program of teaching and research in Orchestral Studies that has the potential of attracting excellent trainees in addition to external funding.
  • A strong commitment to participate in the administrative activities of the department is required.

Terms: Tenure-track position, starting July 1, 2021, at the rank of Assistant Professor. Higher ranks will be considered under exceptional circumstances.

Wage:  Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $ 86,986 (as of May 1, 2020).

Required expertise:

Education:

  • Doctorate or equivalent professional experience in the field of orchestral conducting

Work experience:

  • Evidence of excellence in orchestral conducting is required;
  • Candidates must have a significant national or international performance profile;
  • A secondary area of expertise, though not required, may strengthen the application;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required;
  • Experience in recruitment or openness to developing recruitment skills is an asset;
  • Active knowledge of both French and English language is a requirement for tenure. English-French bilingualism is an asset.
