The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ottawa is excited to announce two tenure-track faculty openings in its new School of Engineering Design and Teaching Innovation. https://engineering.uottawa.ca/engineering-design-teaching-innovation-school

Working in close synergy with each of the Faculty of Engineering’s programs, the new School of Engineering Design and Teaching Innovation, in their dedicated state-of-the-art prototyping facilities located in the STEM building, is a hub of interdisciplinary engineering thinking and has the responsibility for providing engineering design and professional skills courses as well as for pursuing their continuous improvement.

In addition, the School serves as a hub for three key roles and activities: to provide a launching pad for the next phase of the Faculty’s well-recognized activities in experiential engineering design that has been driven up to now by the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Engineering Design; to develop more broadly innovative approaches to teaching and learning in engineering; and to support the design of curricula that best meet the needs of the ever-changing engineering workplace and that underline a distinctive leadership role for the University of Ottawa. The School will connect with organizations in the community, in government and in the private sector to expand on our capacity of bringing real-world interdisciplinary problems to the engineering learning environment and to increase the impact of our students’ projects.

We are seeking creative thinkers who want to have an impact by pushing the boundaries in engineering education to better respond to the needs of society, by improving our understanding of the pedagogy and teaching of engineering disciplines, and who wish to play a pivotal role in the revitalization of engineering programs so that our next generation of students are equipped to fully address the key challenges we face in the 21st century.

Successful candidates will participate in further developing the School, conduct rigorous engineering education research, make national and international contributions to the advancement of engineering education and develop a community of practice around teaching and learning.

The new School of Engineering Design and Teaching Innovation is a key part of the Faculty’s vision and strategy to build upon our experience over the past several years in developing and implementing leading edge training in entrepreneurial engineering design, while broadening our focus in engineering education and professional skills development. The Faculty is aiming to provide leadership and commitment as a critical player in engineering education in Canada and internationally, with the goal of better supporting industry and the community.

Title of the position: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. 

Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions: a) teaching activities; b) scholarly activities to advance research in engineering education; c) academic service activities.

Terms: Tenure-track position. 

Wage: Commensurate to rank and experience.

Skills requirements:

  • Education: Applicants must have a university degree in engineering as well as a PhD or equivalent in a field relevant to their engineering education specialization.
  • Experience: A demonstrated excellent research or professional track record in engineering education, scholarly activities to advance research in engineering education and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Other:
    • Candidates will be expected to teach core, elective and graduate courses, in both French and English at the time of hiring; thus, bilingualism (French/English) is required.
    • Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to contributing to a culture that supports diversity and inclusion.
    • In light of the School’s focus in the areas of design engineering, technological entrepreneurship and professional development, expertise in one or both of these areas will be considered an asset.
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Canada needs to be satisfied at the time of tenure and thereafter.
