The position

At the department, digital aesthetics research is rooted in a research tradition that explores the relationship of digital art and aesthetics to the culture and development of information technology – a tradition that has developed to encompass broader analytical and theoretical aspects related to interface and software studies, computational culture and critique by design. The successful applicant is expected to develop digital aesthetics in such contexts and to develop teaching and research at the department. The successful applicant will be expected to strengthen the department’s research activity and output as well as contributing to the high profile of digital aesthetics research at Aarhus University.

In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated researcher with a strong academic record of accomplishment who will deliver research of the highest international standard, pursue research funding from external funding bodies, and contribute to teaching and supervising students on all degree levels. The successful applicant is expected to take a leading role in managing and developing the department’s research and educational activities, as well as in collaborating nationally and internationally with a range of external partners.


The School of Communication and Culture emphasises the importance of high-quality research, interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding. Accordingly, we are looking for applicants with a strong profile and track record in the study of digital aesthetics at the highest international level, someone who has made significant scholarly contributions to theoretical and thematic developments within the field of digital aesthetics.

The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in relation to both the field of digital aesthetics and the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners, and external research funding. To that end, the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate research leadership as well as taking the lead in applying for international research funding and in developing international research networks.

Applicants must provide a research plan for the next 3 to 5 years and explain how their research can strengthen and develop research and teaching in digital aesthetics at the department. Applicants are also asked to state their visions for future developments in the field of digital aesthetics and explain how their research can further strengthen cross-departmental research and teaching including neighbouring academic areas at the department. Applicants must furthermore document a solid track record in research leadership and international research cooperation. The successful applicant will be expected to have solid experience of teaching at university level and should have experience of teaching and supervising at all levels (BA, MA and PhD) within the field of digital aesthetics, e.g. interface and software studies, computational culture, critique by design as well as areas related to their individual profile. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in the curriculum development of the digital design & information studies programme, including the application of innovative teaching methods.

The successful applicant will also be expected to be a driving force in the ongoing development of degree programmes within the field of digital design and subjects related to digital aesthetics. In connection to this, experience of BA and MA degree programme development will be an advantage.

Talent development

We are seeking applicants who have experience of supervising students at both BA and MA level as well as supervising and helping to develop the careers of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdoc students and assistant professors).
The successful applicant will be expected to supervise students at both BA and MA level as well as supervising and helping to develop the careers of early-career researchers. The successful applicant will also be expected to recruit and supervise PhD students and participate in the development and implementation of PhD courses within the field.

Knowledge exchange

It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange, for instance in research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with society in general and the public dissemination of knowledge.


Applicants must have a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications in a relevant field related to digital aesthetics. Applicants must be able to document, relevant to the position:

  • A record of original academic, peer-reviewed research publications at the highest international level, contributing to developments within digital aesthetics
  • A solid track record in research leadership and in attracting external research funding
  • Experience of participation in international research collaboration
  • Participation in both national and international research networks
  • Extensive, relevant teaching and supervision competences and experience at all levels, including curriculum development
  • Extensive experience of and commitment to supervision and the career development of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdoc students and assistant professors) and the development of PhD courses
  • A significant record of accomplishment with regard to knowledge exchange

Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can document

  • Time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions

Key criteria of the assessment will be the quality of the research output, which is expected to meet the highest international standards, and successful teaching experience at university level within the context of digital aesthetics or related disciplines.

The Department

The Department of Digital Design and Information Studies is a strong and multidisciplinary IT research environment that has existed since the early 1980s. We combine research in interaction design, science-technology studies and digital aesthetics. Our focus is on information technology as a feature of people’s everyday lives and futures. As a result, we have developed strong connections between theory and practice, and the department plays a role in a great number of national and international collaborations, attracting visiting scholars and PhD students from all over the world.
