Full Professorship
(salary level W3, tenured)

in Ancient Near Eastern Studies
(successor to Prof Dr Hans Neumann)


This position is to be filled by 1 September 2020.


The candidate appointed to this position must possess extensive knowledge in research and teaching across the entire spectrum of ancient Near Eastern studies with specialisation in individual areas. His/her tasks will consist of offering courses totalling nine hours of instruction per week (SWS) and administering examinations in the subject-relevant bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes offered jointly by the Institute and the Institute of Egyptology and Coptology. The candidate must provide instruction in both Akkadian and Sumerian studies. Preference is given to candidates with research expertise in the central fields of Ancient Near Eastern history, culture and languages, and who possess interest in cultural-historical, philological and social scientific issues. The candidate is expected to actively participate in shaping the existing interdisciplinary institutes and research partnerships along with their corresponding projects. Prior experience in acquisition and implementation of externally funded projects is desired.


The requirements include a university degree in ancient Near Eastern studies, pedagogical aptitude, and competence to produce scientific work, substantiated by the quality of a doctorate. Additional academic achievements may have been acquired within the context of an associate professorship (Juniorprofessur), a habilitation, as an academic researcher at a university or non-university institution, or in connection with an academic activity in business, industry, administration or other social area, either in Germany or abroad.
