Job Summary

Applications and nominations are invited for the position of Head of the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences (SLHS) in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Purdue University. The position is a full-time, tenure track, 12-month appointment and will be available July 1, 2025.

 

The Head will provide leadership and vision and will facilitate departmental research, scholarship, and educational activities.  In addition, the Head is responsible for fiscal management of the department, upholding the department's Core Values and promoting a culture of inclusion and belonging,  personnel issues, faculty/staff development, alumni relations, and advocacy for the Department to the College, University and larger community.  The Head will be dedicated to upholding the excellence of the clinical programs. 

 

We seek an internationally recognized researcher with a history of skillful interdisciplinary leadership and an inspiring vision for the Department.  The successful candidate will be an academic leader and scholar with a commitment to the research, clinical, and teaching missions of the Department.  Applicants must have a Ph. D or equivalent degree, have scholarly credentials commensurate with the rank of Tenured Full Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and have expertise in one of the department's subject areas.  The candidate must be able to contribute to the research portfolio of the department.  Desirable attributes include a record of published research and external funding consistent with the rank of Tenured Full Professor in SLHS, prior experience in academic program development.

About the Department:

Housed within the state-of-the-art Lyles-Porter Hall, the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences has accredited and highly ranked clinical programs in Audiology (# 8) and Speech-Language Pathology (# 2), and awards bachelor’s, master’s, AuD, and PhD degrees. With 20 tenure track and 15 clinical faculty members, the Department is diverse and collegial and hosts a thriving interdisciplinary community. The M.D. Steer Speech, Language and Hearing Clinics are housed within the department and provide diagnostic and rehabilitative services to patients across the lifespan and facilitate research collaborations.  

 

Faculty in the Department lead two interdisciplinary NIH training grants in Communication Disorders and in Auditory Neuroscience.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity to capitalize on an extraordinary network of collaborations and resources that include strong support for interdisciplinary and translational research.  Current faculty have ongoing collaborations with many other units/programs/centers:  Department of Psychological Sciences, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Biological Sciences, Department of Linguistics, College of Veterinary Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, Purdue Autism Research Center, Advanced Methods at Purdue, Center for Brain, Behavior, and NeuroRehabilitation, Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience, Center for Early Learning, and the Center on Aging and the Life Course.  Faculty in the Department also have access to an adjacent state-of-the-art MRI research facility.
