DescriptionThe Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program at the University of Pennsylvania is recruiting a part-time lecturer to teach the course “Differentiating Instruction for Diverse Learners - Special Education.” Its purpose is to provide instructional certificate candidates with understandings and strategies to support students with disabilities across all content areas. Candidates will develop a thoughtful orientation toward an instructional strategy base for learners with disabilities based on knowledge of the following: federal and state policy, concepts related to disability, concepts related to differentiating instruction per student abilities and needs, collaborative instruction, and ethical responsibilities of instructors working with students with disabilities. Candidates will develop a beginning understanding of disability categories present in the educational setting and methods for accommodating and modifying for a diverse array of student needs and capabilities. This position is part-time and non-tenure-track and involves in-person teaching; pay is competitive. The Urban Teaching Apprenticeship master's program develops members of a network of transformational educators advocating for educational justice in urban contexts. UTAP educators center the voices and agency of students and their communities, combining reflective practice with a deep understanding of content knowledge and culturally responsive pedagogy. Coursework and intensive field experiences build on content expertise and support the development of pedagogical content knowledge. Teachers leave the program inspired to use the power of teaching to deepen student learning, transform schools, and increase educational equity. QualificationsWe seek applicants with demonstrated commitment to excellence in k-12 teaching in urban schools and to the pursuit of social justice, equity, and inclusion. A master’s degree or doctorate in education or a related field and prior experience working with Special Education students in k-12 schools are required. Experience teaching in urban k-12 schools and in higher education are valued.
