UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education, and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.

Course / Program Description

Educ X23: Foundations of Early Care and Education: An Introduction to Teaching Young Children. Learn about early care, education approaches, and how to identify quality care. This online course on teaching young children introduces the approaches, history, and development of early childhood education programs. The course offers an overview of developmentally appropriate learning environments, curriculum, and how to define play-based learning and outcomes. Students explore how different program approaches meet the needs of the young child. Students learn observation, assessment, and strategies for guiding children’s behavior. Field observations are required.

Educ X24: Introduction to Curriculum and Learning Environments. This online course covers developmentally appropriate curriculum methods for early childhood. Students learn to design, equip, plan, and implement engaging learning environments for supporting developmental goals and knowledge. Learn to create optimal curricula and learning experiences based on theory, observation, and assessment within a context of relationships and play. Develop strategies for culturally relevant curricula. Embed activities designed to establish children’s positive attitudes and behaviors for learning, pro-social behavior, a strong sense of self, competence, and emotion regulation. Understand how the curriculum and learning environment can guide cognitive, social, and emotional development and mitigate challenging behaviors. Students are required to observe young children.

Job Description

The UCLA Extension Early Childhood Education (ECE) program is hiring an instructor who can teach core, lower division, ECE courses in Spanish. We offer an Early Childhood Education Associate Teacher certificate in the Spanish language that meets the requirements for a CA Child Development Associate Teacher Permit. The position entails teaching 1 to 3 courses per year, each of which is 8 weeks long and online. Student cohort may include those working on their certificate through a grant program, students who have not attended college before, students who have no prior experience in ECE, as well as students who are prepared as ECE teachers and looking for advancement. Course syllabi will be provided, and the instructor will tailor the course to meet the needs of the students, while also maintaining a high quality, teacher preparation program.

Instructor Duties:

  • The instructor is responsible for updating the syllabus, as needed
  • Selecting texts/readings with the support of the Program Director
  • Creating a course shell in LMS (currently Canvas)
  • Balancing an appropriate workload for rich learning, including practical applications of concepts in the course
  • Providing timely feedback and grading, and a student-oriented, support perspective on teaching
  • Attending required professional development activities, which are the annual meeting and the social justice book club
  • New instructors are required to take a paid, Canvas training to set up their first course before they start and to take UC-required training modules every other year

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Proficiency in academic Spanish, both reading and writing
• Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or related field
• Interest or experience in working with underserved or under-resourced students
• Proficiency and comfort using computers
• Experience working in early childhood education environments and with very young children (preferred)
• Prior teaching experience at the college level (preferred)
• Prior experience with online learning (preferred)
