Position Summary

The Indiana University School of Medicine Office of Graduate Medical Education (IUSM GME) is seeking an innovative individual to serve as the Education Specialist for Program Quality for Graduate Medical Education. The Education Specialist for Program Quality will work with the GME senior academic leadership in the creation and institution of essential educational initiatives, educational assessment tools, accreditation requirements focused on areas of education, diversity and will work with the IUSM GME programs in providing guidance for continuous improvement in program quality. This individual will also assist the senior associate dean and the GME program directors with plans for GME trainee educational remediation in the ACGME competency areas. This individual will have experience in leadership, proven record of educational scholarship productivity and experience with accreditation criteria.

Additionally, the Education Specialist for Program Quality creates programmatic venues for multiple new ACGME institutional and program educational requirements. This individual will take a lead in the IUSM GME Resident as Teacher (RasT) program and ensure the school exceeds LCME accreditation requirements.

Position Summary:

The Faculty in this position will report to the senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME). This is a full-time position. Responsibilities include:
• Develop, implement, and assess programs and services to meet the strategic goals of the Office of Graduate Medical Education and achieve high quality outcomes for IUSM residency and fellowship programs. Collaborate with GME leadership in these efforts.
• Provide leadership and oversight of GME development of scholarly activity and publications; including, but not limited to, writing and applying for grants.
• Assist GME leadership in the review of GME trainee remediation concerns and provide intervention measures for minimizing and addressing remediation concerns.
• Design and assist IUSM GME residencies and fellowships with implementing quality improvement processes and projects which contribute to program improvement and to maintaining full accreditation by the ACGME.
• Assist leaders of the ACGME and non-ACGME accredited IUSM GME programs meet their goals as well as internal and external benchmarks for excellence in educational initiatives.
• In collaboration with the assistant dean, lead all efforts in IUSM GME Resident as Teacher program and ensure the school exceeds LCME accreditation requirements.
• Develop performance equity plans for GME expansion programs.
• Work closely with the assistant director for accreditation and the director for GME to accomplish mutual goals for excellence in the unit and training programs.
• Serve as the GME Office representative and work closely with the IUSM GMEC Professionalism Review Committee to review professionalism concerns regarding IUSM GME trainees.
• Assist with development of professionalism modules.
• In collaboration with the assistant dean and GME program directors, develop cultural competency courses for GME trainees.
• Maintain knowledge of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) institutional and program requirements; as well as, Resident as Teacher (RasT) standards for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
• Collaborate with other IUSM educational affairs units in strategic planning processes, to enhance and promote mutual advantages across the continuum of IUSM medical education.

Basic Qualifications

Requirements: candidates must have all of the following.
• Doctorate or Terminal degree is required. PhD or EdD (or equivalent)
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant academic program development experience
• Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, leadership, and long-range program development

Desired qualifications: to be successful in this position, candidates should have all of the following.

The faculty will have previously demonstrated excellence as an educator as well as leadership experience. Attributes should include leadership experience in higher education or medical education, the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholder groups, collaborate with others to develop and implement effective programs that meet internal and external metrics related to excellence in teaching and learning and evaluate and disseminate outcomes associated with the work of the GME office. At IUSM, Graduate Medical Education is encountering a most significant transition regarding program growth and quality initiatives and outcomes. Therefore, the individual who has a passion for launching new ideas and leading change will be highly successful in this position.
