Job Summary:

This position is for an internal substitute educator on an as-needed basis. Assignment duration is variable depending on need and may range from half-day, full-day or long term (six weeks or more). Pay is based upon assignment duration.

The substitute educator will provide coverage for middle and upper school educators when they are absent and, when applicable, proctor exams. As an internal substitute, this position will implement prepared lesson plans, supervise the class setting, record student attendance, monitor students, distribute and collect materials, and communicate with the absent educator any pertinent information. Content expertise is not necessary. This position will occasionally help provide supervision for experiential trips, study hall, emergency drills and school events.

Core Functions & Duties

• Implement and teach lesson plans and instructions as prepared and directed by the absent educator, or consult with the applicable Department Chair, Division Director, or other responsible staff if a lesson plan is not provided
• Leave notes on class progress for the regular educator at the end of the teaching day
• Provide teaching assistance to lead educator when additional supervision or support of a classroom is needed
• Communicate any concerns with student health, safety, behavioral conduct, or learning difficulties with the administration
• As needed, communicate with students and parents as department- related issues and questions arise
• Create a learning environment where students feel safe, welcome and challenged
• Consistent with Geffen Academy leadership’s direction, engage in co-curricular and extracurricular activities
• Adhere to Geffen Academy and the University of California applicable policies, procedures, and established protocols. Read and adhere to the school norms, protocols and requirements as outlined in the school Handbooks



Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Bachelor’s degree or higher

• A successful track record working with secondary school students

• A clear understanding and embrace of the Geffen Academy’s mission, vision and values
• An excellent record of establishing and maintaining safety in a secondary school setting
• Strong background in secondary education with a clear understanding and embrace of the Geffen Academy’s mission, vision, and values
• Experience in a “bring your own device” (“BYOD”) educational setting and/or commitment to BYOD program
• A joyful embrace of teaching and coaching
• The ability to think and act strategically combined with a strong commitment to providing an excellent experience for each student
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills to articulate and explain instructional issues to colleagues, students, and families
• Must be self-directed and able to effectively prioritize and handle multiple tasks subject to frequent interruption
• Experience in a variety of instructional and co-curricular/extra-curricular roles within a secondary school (preferred).
