Course Description

The Success Academy is a community engagement program that provides adults in communities of greater Los Angeles access to knowledge of the essential skills to be successful in securing, maintaining, and progressing in a job or starting a career through empowerment sessions hosted by UCLA Extension in the community. In partnership with a community-based organization, UCLA Extension develops a Success Academy program to meet the needs of the community we will be serving.

UCLA Extension has extensive experience working with adults who are interested in improving or advancing in their current or a new career. Unfortunately, there are adults in communities throughout Los Angeles who do not have access to opportunities to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in attaining and maintaining a job.

General Job Duties

One of the session topics included as part of the Success Academy is Financial Literacy. The session includes an introduction into the concepts of financial literacy, This course will empower participants with the knowledge necessary to better manage their own personal finances. The session will outline methods to consider when dealing with money matters, an introduction to financial concepts and incorporating strategies to better manage personal finances.

Applications to teach are accepted throughout the year in order to fill immediate programneeds and to increase the depth of the instructor pool, but interviews will only be scheduled with qualified applicants who can fill anticipated openings.
Classes can be online or in person. Flexible availability to teach morning, afternoon and evening. Positions are contingent upon establishing partnerships with community based organizations.

Instructor Duties

  • Develop or update course syllabus to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director and Program Manager.
  • Use subject-matter expertise to impart knowledge to students and leverage additional resources appropriately to enhance the curriculum (i.e. use of videos, technology etc.)
  • Design interactive and motivational classroom activities to fully engage participants and to reinforce student learning
  • Update materials periodically, ensure cultural competency and regularly monitor course evaluations in order to make adjustments and improvements to the curriculum
  • Utilize Canvas as a course support platform in in-person courses, and as the delivery platform in online and hybrid courses

Minimum Qualifications

  • Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.
  • Current knowledge of and demonstrated proficiency in subject area.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn the use of instructional technology and online teaching tools.
  • Ability to teach in the online and in-person settings.
  • College-level and/or continuing education teaching experience preferred.
  • Experience designing curriculum and working with diverse communities preferred.

Salary: $85/instruction hour and $100 one time for course
development
