Position Overview


University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently seeking Instructors for Lean Six Sigma Green Belts Training Program.


University of Calgary Continuing Education (UCCE) houses one of Canada's largest and most successful continuing education departments. It is a multi-disciplinary unit offering diploma, certificate and non-degree programs in the classroom and online through technologies for course delivery.


In support of the University of Calgary's core principles and financial objectives, Continuing Education is an academic unit with a mandate to respond to the needs of the community through the design, development, and delivery of high-quality lifelong learning opportunities.


Each year, UCCE serves over 20,000 adult learners and offers more than one thousand courses taught by hundreds of instructors—all experts in their fields. It is expected to fund, through revenue generation, the majority of its operational costs while contributing financially to the university.


The success of the University of Calgary Continuing Education in meeting its business target in a competitive environment is dependent upon effectively serving students and by providing high-quality instruction and programs.


Position Description


University of Calgary Continuing Education is currently recruiting for Master Black Belt instructors to teach the following courses within our Lean Six Sigma for Green Belts Training Program (all classroom delivery):


    PDS 240 Lean Six Sigma for Green Belts: Foundations

    PDS 241 Lean Six Sigma for Green Belts: Statistical Methods

    PDS 242 Lean Six Sigma for Green Belts: Quality Improvement Project

    PDS 243  Business Execution Systems: Introduction to Lean Six Sigma

    PDS 244 Lean Six Sigma: Define Phase

    PDS 245 Lean Six Sigma: Measure Phase

    PDS 246 Lean Six Sigma: Analyze Phase

    PDS 247 Lean Six Sigma: Improve Phase

    PDS 248 Lean Six Sigma: Control Phase


 This is contract (term) position, and these instructional positions are non-credit teaching appointments and, as such, are contract positions without benefits (other than those required by Employment Standards).


Course details:


Our Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training Program is offered in class and online. Courses range from one to five days in length.


Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training prepares leaders to achieve business performance goals by maximizing throughput and quality while minimizing cost and inefficiency. Learn a globally-recognized methodology that combines Lean tools and Six Sigma methodology to identify opportunities for improvement and lead meaningful change within your organization. Throughout this five-day workshop, we will cover the DMAIC methodology, team leadership skills, and statistical analysis tools required to make data-driven improvements for more sustainable business processes. Continuing Education offers a Green Belt designation as a secondary certification provider. Upon successful completion of 86 hours of training, students will receive a Certificate of Completion and their Green Belt designation. Course content aligns with third-party accreditation bodies such as ASQ and IASSC.

Scope of Responsibilities (high level)


    Create effective lessons plans and develop content, learning activities, presentations, assignments, evaluations, and examinations in line with third-party accreditation providers.

    Communicate complex Lean and Six Sigma technical knowledge, associated tools, and industry standards and best practices.

    Create student engagement opportunities through the facilitation of course materials in both classroom and online courses.

    Utilize a learning management system to provide students with course materials, assessments, and communications.

    Utilize learning tools to facilitate online synchronous and asynchronous course delivery including all course materials, experiences and student communication.

    Providing coaching support to students completing quality improvement projects and case studies.




    Master Black Belt certification is preferred – will consider a Black Belt

    Five or more years of experience leading Lean and Six Sigma improvement projects. Experience across multiple industries such as engineering, healthcare, IT, Finance, HR, and Manufacturing is an asset

    Minimum of post-secondary education in Business/Adult Education/Industrial Engineering/Computer Science or related fields is required

    Master’s degree is preferred; however, a combination of work experience and education will be considered

    Previous experience teaching, training, or coaching Lean Six Sigma learners is preferable

    Experience designing adult learning programs is an asset

    Strong knowledge of Minitab as well as learning management software such as Desire2Learn (Bright space), Adobe Connect, Blackboard or Moodle

    Successful candidates will have a proven track-record of quality improvement results, strong communication skills, and professionalism

    Project Management Certification is desirable
