junior researcher (male/female)

(pay group 13 TV-L) 

from 1st March 2020 for a 100% position limited to a period of four years. The period of employment is in accordance with the regulations of the ´Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz´ (German Science Contract Act).

The international comparative research project Welcoming Spaces in Europe. Revitalising Shrinking Areas by Hosting Non-EU-Migrants deals with processes of inclusion of non EU-migrants in shrinking regions e.g. regions which tend to be affected by demographic change and population decline. The aim of the project is to explore participative and innovative forms of cooperation between municipalities, migrants, welfare state agencies, civil society actors and private companies that foster the inclusion of both migrants and old-established inhabitants while contributing to the sustainable development of these areas. Comparative field research takes place in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Poland and Germany. The consortium of the research project consists of academic and practitioners University of Utrecht (lead), University of Siegen, University Coruňa, University of Bologna, Warsaw School of Economics, CEPAIM Foundation (Spain); FIERI Foundation (Italy); Ocalenie Foundation (Poland); National Association of Dutch Small Settlements.

The position is intended to facilitate your academic or artistic qualification. You will have the opportunity within the framework of your tasks.

Your tasks:

In cooperation with the above-mentioned international partners* and other junior researchers:

• Inventory initiatives for the inclusion of migrants in German shrinking cities/regions and elaborating an European "database" of these initiatives;
• Exploring the history of these initiatives, their current situation and working conditions and their potential for sustainable development in relation to the economic, spatial and political position of the shrinking cities/regions;
• Research on the internal and external processes of inclusion and forms of cooperation between municipalities, migrants, welfare state agencies, civil society actors and private entrepreneurs through qualitative and quantitative empirical research methods;
• Presentation of research achievements at national and international conferences during the current four-year project; publications in English and German journals, presentations and discussion of research results with local/regional/communal actors and other stakeholders.

Your profile:

• Very good academic degree (Master, Diploma) in the field of social pedagogy or other social sciences;
• Knowledge about or strong interest in social work, migration, inclusion, sociospatial processes of demographic change and economic structural change of shrinking regions;
• Outstanding oral and written English and German skills;
• Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods;
• Joy in intensive, sociospatial field research and willingness to spend periods in the German researching areas;
• Independent thinking and critical analytical skills;
• Proven ability and pleasure in team-oriented work (e.g. joint research projects and/or joint publications);
• Interest in and experience with research communication beyond the academic target group.

The position offers the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and internationally oriented research environment in which academic, civil society and practitioners work together in a varied and responsible manner in an inspiring working environment, as well as the opportunity for further education and training. The position is located at the professorship Spatial Development and Social Inclusion which is in turn affiliated to the Centre for Planning and Evaluation of Social Services (ZPE), where experienced scientists conduct research on inclusion in German and European research associations.
