The Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilization (NELC) at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA seeks to appoint a Full-Time Lecturer to a 2-year, non-tenure track appointment in Arabic language instruction to begin September 2019. This is a full-time, 9 month position.


The lecturer may teach elementary, intermediate, and advanced level Arabic language courses. The lecturer will also participate in service responsibilities for the Department of Near Eastern Languages and the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies’ Middle East Center.


University of Washington faculty engage in teaching and service. Our faculty, staff, and students are intellectually engaged with the ways that race, gender identity, sexuality, ability, class, and ethnicity intersect and shape the human experience, both within the educational experience and outside of it. Through this work, we encourage all members of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization to think critically about the world around them and engage actively.


This position may be renewed pending a review during its second year.



Candidates should have experience teaching intermediate and advanced level Arabic language and culture at the college/university level; five years of college/university level Arabic language instruction and/or a Master's degree or higher in a relevant field (such as Arabic language and/or culture, language pedagogy, or applied linguistics). The successful applicant will be a dynamic teacher with the ability to develop curricular materials, to assist in program building, and to engage in community and campus outreach.
