School of Languages and Cultures

The School of Languages and Cultures has grown rapidly in recent years and now has over 1400 EFTSL (11,200 course enrolments). It is one of the largest Schools of language instruction in Australia with over 45 academic staff. The School teaches Chinese, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and English as an International Language (EIL), as well as Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, to students in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of International Studies, the university-wide concurrent Diploma in Languages, the Diploma of Arts, and dual degree programs.

At postgraduate level the School offers two NAATI-accredited Masters programs in Translation and Interpreting (one in Japanese and one in Chinese) and a large Masters program in Applied Linguistics. Staff research and supervise PhD students in a diverse range of fields relating to languages and cultures.

The Applied Linguistics Program offers a full range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Applied Linguistics and places a strong emphasis on both research and postgraduate studies in the MA Coursework Program in Applied Linguistics and Research Higher Degree offerings. The program is dedicated to research on the development and use of non-native language in all its complexity, including the acquisition and structure of second languages, adult language pedagogy, and the social, cultural, and political contexts of second language learning and use. The MA Coursework Program in Applied Linguistics is one of the largest in Australia and has a strong international reputation.

About This Opportunity

The School is looking to appoint a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics in the process of extending its international research profile in an area of relevance to the current teaching and research profile of the program.

Individuals with research and teaching interests in any area of applied linguistics are welcome to apply, although those with an interest in one or more of the following areas of applied linguistics are especially encouraged to apply: text analytics, quantitative methods, research methods.

Research interests in one or more of the languages taught in the school would also be advantageous.

The successful appointee will engage in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision, undertake and contribute to further development of the School’s Applied Linguistics program, as well as performing research, service/engagement and other activities associated with the School.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Our Ideal Candidate

Applicants should possess a PhD in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, or related fields. The applicant should also have demonstrated expertise and experience in undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching. The applicant should also have a record of high quality research publications appropriate to the level of the appointment.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, continuing position at Academic level B.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $99,542 - $118,206, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $116,465 - $138,301
