The Opportunity

The internationally-recognised dynamism of the city of Melbourne is built upon its vibrant cultures of art, design, and architecture. This can be seen in the city’s array of significant collecting and exhibiting institutions, its lively calendar of cultural events, and the richness and diversity of its creative practitioners. In this environment, the Monash Faculty of Art, Design, and Architecture (MADA) is an open and connected community of strategic and creative thinkers, practitioners and students who advocate the critical role of creative practice for quality of life. We seek to dissolve the boundaries between disciplines to create a new space for envisaging the possibilities of an ethical, sustainable, inclusive future for all.

The Department of Architecture at MADA is an internationally networked, creative community of practitioners, educators and researchers engaged with the shifting landscapes of the discipline, and the changing role of the architect as a designer, researcher, and advocate: as both persuasive collaborator and visionary mediator. In its first eleven years, the department has achieved an enviable reputation for the high quality of its professional degree program and a clear path of design-based research. As a young program, Architecture at MADA has sought to progressively reformulate architectural education to address the challenges of a rapidly changing world, most urgently in the context of the current climate change emergency.

In light of this, we seek innovative practitioners and academics from around the world to collaborate with us in our teaching and research programmes. Our interest in innovation is not a pursuit of uniqueness, novelty or avant-garde status, but sees innovation as a foundation for advocating alternatives and cultivating imagination, to provide visions, strategies, techniques and approaches to addressing our evolving built environments. For this reason, we periodically advertise the role of Innovation Fellow, the thematic focus of which changes with each call.

In 2020, we are particularly interested in projects centrally motivated by environmental sustainability in architecture and the built environment. Given this, we are particularly interested in studies of digital design and fabrication, and advanced approaches to architectural structure and construction with awareness of their implications for both the production and occupation of the built environment.

We are also specifically interested in projects which utilise our state-of-the-art studio and workshop facilities. The faculty has a remarkably well-equipped suite of spaces that enable a full range of techniques from traditional to high-tech – from bronze and glass casting to printmaking, to digital fabrication and architectural robotics. Teaching and research projects which propose applied, interdisciplinary use of the workshops, will be well-regarded. More information on the workshops can be found at https://www.monash.edu/mada/current-students/facilities.

The one-year fellowship involves the pursuit of a clearly articulated research project in combination with research-led teaching. Fellows will be expected to run a design studio each semester and at least one advanced architectural elective (‘studies unit’).

Candidates must have at least a Master of Architecture degree or equivalent.

The fellowship is available to begin in July 2020 and includes:

  • salary within the range of $97,203 - $115,429 plus 9.5% employer superannuation
  • AU$3,000 research allowance
  • return economy airfare to Melbourne
  • two weeks of transit accommodation and assistance finding ongoing accommodation.

Candidates are expected to be in residence in Melbourne during the fellowship. If you are not already eligible to work in Australia, you will need to obtain and maintain a valid visa from the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) allowing you to work at Monash University in Australia

  3. Samples of professional, scholarly, or creative work
  4. 1-2 samples of relevant syllabi
  5. Contact information for three referees

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
